Franz Wagner suffered a left high ankle sprain on Dec. 7 against the New York. He has played only four games since and has missed 21 consecutive games since Feb. 11. Here is the latest update on the Orlando Magic star forward.
Franz Wagner Remains Out vs. Phoenix Suns Tonight
The Magic officially listed Wagner out against the Phoenix Suns on March 31 due to “Injury/Illness – Left High Ankle; Sprain Injury Management.” He played on Jan. 15 and 18 against the Memphis Grizzlies in Berlin and London. Wagner then missed the next nine contests before suiting back up against the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 9 and 11. He has yet to play, seemingly re-aggravating the initial December high ankle sprain.
On Feb. On Feb. 18, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Orlando would re-evaluate Wagner in three weeks, but the team never provided an official return timetable. The Magic continue to rule out the 24-year-old for each contest.
According to Motion Orthopaedics, high ankle sprains can take 6 to 12 weeks to fully heal. Wagner returned in five weeks to play the two games in Europe.
However, Orlando received good news on Wagner as of March 30. According to Rotowire, “He recently joined the G League’s Osceola Magic for practice and is trending in the right direction. His next opportunity to suit up will come Wednesday against the [Atlanta] Hawks.”
Wagner is in the midst of his second consecutive 20-point scoring campaign. He averages 21.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.1 steals. The Magic certainly miss his production, as they own a 23-23 record this season without him. Wagner has been healthy for most of his career, playing at least 60 games every season.
However, he has played only 28 games with eight contests left in the 2025-26 regular season.
Magic in Midst of a Season-Worst Stretch Without Wagner
Orlando has lost 7 of its last 8 games from March 16 to March 29. This includes a terrible loss to the 17-58 Indiana Pacers. The Magic’s schedule does not get any easier, facing the Suns tonight and the red-hot Hawks on Wednesday in a back-to-back.
Orlando fell to 4 games over .500 during this stretch, with a 39-35 record. It holds the No. 8 seed, three games behind Atlanta for the No. 6 spot. Just a few short weeks ago, Orlando sat in the top six in a playoff position. Now, it must find a way to bounce back in these final eight contests.
Wagner’s potential return could provide the Magic a much-needed boost in bot on-court production and confidence. He will likely operate under a strict minutes restriction when he returns. This could affect his playing time in a potential play-in/playoff matchup after the regular season ends on April 12.
