Jeff Teague Details Why He’d Pick Hornets Phenom Kon Knueppel Over Austin Reaves

Jeff Teague explains why he would choose Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel over Austin Reaves in a bold new evaluation.

The debate around rising NBA talent often reveals more about perception than production. As new stars emerge, comparisons become sharper and opinions stronger. A recent take from a former player has now added fuel to that conversation, putting a rookie at the center of an unexpected but bold claim.

Why Jeff Teague Backs Hornets Rookie Kon Knueppel Over Austin Reaves

Former NBA guard Jeff Teague, speaking on the “Club 520 Podcast,” made a striking evaluation of Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel, placing him above Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves. His reasoning was rooted not just in potential but in what Knueppel has already shown during his debut season.

“Kon Knueppel is arguably the best White American Basketball player in the league. I would take him over Austin Reaves. Cooper Flagg is good but he’s not like this.”

Teague’s statement reflects how quickly Knueppel’s reputation has grown. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft has delivered a standout rookie campaign, combining scoring efficiency with all-around production. He is averaging 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting an impressive 43.8% from three-point range.

That shooting ability has become a defining part of his impact. Knueppel entered the game against the New York Knicks with 247 made three-pointers and surpassed the 250 mark during the contest, finishing with 253.

According to the NBA, he is now the youngest player ever to hit at least 250 three-pointers in a single season and the only player aged 22 or younger to achieve that milestone. For perspective, Stephen Curry made 166 threes in his rookie season.

His production has translated directly into team success. Knueppel’s 26-point, 11-rebound, and 8-assist performance against the Knicks helped extend the Hornets’ winning streak to five games. It was also his first game with at least 25 points and 10 rebounds, narrowly missing a triple-double.

The Hornets’ improvement has mirrored his rise. The Hornets now sit at 39-34, tied with the Orlando Magic for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. If they maintain their position, it would mark the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 2016.

Knueppel credited the team’s identity and collective commitment for the turnaround.

“I just think it’s a commitment to what we do, and establishing an identity as a team,” he said postgame. “We want to play in big-time games.”

Beyond individual numbers, that mindset helps explain why Teague’s comments carry weight. Knueppel is not just producing statistically; he is doing so in meaningful games with playoff implications.

He has also swept all four Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors from October/November through February, further strengthening his Rookie of the Year case.

Teague’s comparison to Austin Reaves ultimately highlights a broader shift. While Reaves is already established, Knueppel’s combination of shooting, consistency, and immediate team impact suggests a player whose trajectory may already be altering the conversation around emerging stars.
