Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra disagreed with Bam Adebayo’s claims that the team lacks “competitive spirit” after one of the toughest losses of the season against the San Antonio Spurs. The coach also emphasized that amid the toughest stretch, the team has to rise to the occasion and do its best with consistency.
Erik Spoelstra Disagrees With Bam Adebayo After Heat’s Loss to Spurs
Adebayo and the Heat are making a push to make the 2026 playoffs, but their recent performances don’t show they’re on the right track. The recent loss to the Spurs was their fifth straight, as the Spurs notched a gritty win against them, 136-111.
Norman Powell led Miami with 21 points, and Adebayo and Tyler Herro contributed 18 points each. However, they were unable to withstand Spurs leading scorer Victor Wembanyama’s MVP-level performance, as he added a phenomenal 26 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 4 assists to win the sixth straight game for the No. 2 team in the Western Conference.
The Heat captain was displeased with the team’s “competitive spirit” above all else following a heartbreaking loss, especially at a time when even a single win holds great significance. He praised Myron Gardner for his playmaking after he scored 9 points in 18 minutes, and suggested that the other players should bring the same level of efficiency to the court.
“We didn’t bring a competitive spirit. That’s really what it was. Shout out to Myron Gardner, man, I noticed Myron because he plays that hard. We need to honestly match his energy, all of us, because we play like that, we’ll be a totally different team, but our energy has to shift, and then basketball is going to be basketball.”
Spoelstra responded to his mentee’s claims and dismissed them, stating that the team is competitive enough but needs to be more consistent on the road to the playoffs.
“We’re proven that we have a great competitive spirit, it’s just one game before that…gotta have the consistency with it, these games are the moments of truth right now…we have to rise to that challenge collectively.”

Adebayo, who holds the second-highest single-game scoring performance in NBA history, and Spoelstra were involved in a heated courtside altercation midway through the game after the latter subbed out the captain, not allowing him to log a full 29 minutes on the floor. Kel’el Ware was brought in as part of the bench rotation, prompting Adebayo to vent his frustration and make it clear that he does not want the team to end up in the play-in tournament.
“I don’t want to be in the play-in. So some of that is, yeah, he’s got to protect me from myself, but also, I don’t want to be in the f***ing play-in.”
The head coach later explained that he did what was in the team’s best interest and that their exchange was nothing more than an expression of passion.
The Heat will face the Cleveland Cavaliers today, and the Spurs will lock horns with the Grizzlies.
