ESPN’s Tim MacMahon Explains Why Luka Dončić’s 60-Point Game Was ‘More Impressive’ Than Bam Adebayo’s 83-Point Eruption

ESPN analyst Tim MacMahon explains why he believes Luka Dončić's 60-point performance was more impressive than Bam Adebayo's 83.

In the NBA, scoring often takes center stage. With social media and the 24-hour news cycle, statistics and standout performances quickly capture the attention of fans.

Regardless of team loyalty, followers of the sport gravitate toward highlights. Comparing players and their numbers inevitably fuels debate, and one media member recently weighed in on Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo’s historic night.

Why ESPN Analyst Tim MacMahon Prefers Luka Dončić’s 60 Points over Bam Adebayo’s 83

On March 10 against the Washington Wizards, Adebayo scored 83 points, the second-most in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game. While many applauded the effort, ESPN analyst Tim MacMahon offered a different perspective.

“That 60, I’m sorry, that was more impressive than Bam’s 83 vs a tanking team,” MacMahon said on “The Hoop Collective.” “That 60, when you needed all 60 to win a 21, 22-hour turnaround back-to-back against a team that is trying to make the playoffs.”

On Thursday, the Heat faced the Los Angeles Lakers. Dončić scored 60 points on 18-for-30 shooting, though the Lakers won 134-126. Adebayo finished with 12 points in the loss.

MacMahon’s preference appears to stem from several factors. First, he noted that Adebayo’s 83 came against a Wizards team he believes is rebuilding. However, Washington has recently acquired Trae Young and Anthony Davis, both perennial All-Stars.

Additionally, while Miami won by 21 points, the Wizards still scored 129, a strong offensive showing. Dončić’s 60, by contrast, came against the Heat, who currently sit in the No. 9 spot in the Eastern Conference.

In a previous episode of the podcast, MacMahon said he was disgusted by Adebayo’s stat-chasing effort to reach 83.

“I never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever want to hear about Heat culture and professionalism and all that crap again because that was the most blatant stat chasing I’ve ever seen,” MacMahon said.

Dončić’s performance also followed a 40-point game against the Houston Rockets. According to Basketball Reference, he has scored at least 30 points in each of his last five games, with three above 35. In that span, he has averaged 39.8 points.

Reactions to Adebayo’s 83-point effort remain mixed. Many praised the achievement, particularly since he is not typically regarded as a prolific scorer. This season marks only the second time in his nine-year career that he has averaged at least 20 points.

At 38-33, the Adebayo-led Heat sit in the No. 9 spot in the East. Having lost their last four games, they will need a late surge to strengthen playoff positioning. Their next three contests are against the San Antonio Spurs and two road games against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
