Jonathan Kuminga 70-Foot Shot Stuns NBA World as Hawks Beat Mavericks

Jonathan Kuminga hit an accidental 70-foot buzzer-beater in the Atlanta Hawks' win over the Mavericks, continuing his breakout season.

Jonathan Kuminga left the NBA world stunned with one of the wildest plays of the season, as the Atlanta Hawks cruised past the Dallas Mavericks 135-120 on the road at the American Airlines Center on March 18.

Kuminga’s moment came at the buzzer of the third quarter. What looked like a routine full-court heave turned into something extraordinary as the ball sailed from nearly three-quarter court and dropped straight through the net.

The sequence instantly went viral, with the NBA world struggling to process what they had just witnessed.

How Jonathan Kuminga’s Wild Long-Range Shot Stunned the NBA World

Kuminga made the longest basket by a Hawk in the play-by-play era and the sixth-longest among all players since 1997-98. While it seems Kuminga was going for a pass, the ball ultimately landed in the basket. Nevertheless, the shot summed up Kuminga’s current form.

Since joining the Hawks on Feb. 5 following a trade from the Golden State Warriors, he has looked like a completely different player.

In six games with Atlanta, Kuminga is averaging 14.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting an efficient 56.6% from the field and 58.3% from 3-point range. Against Dallas, he added 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists on 63.6% shooting, finishing with a +10 plus-minus.

There is a visible confidence in his game right now. Almost everything he puts up seems to find the basket.

That wasn’t always the case, though. During his time with the Warriors this season, Kuminga often found himself on the fringes, dealing with limited minutes and multiple DNPs.

The move to Atlanta has completely changed that narrative. Kuminga seems to stun the NBA world every time he hits the court.

“KUMINGA WHAT HAVE YOU DONE??? 🤯🤯🤯,” the official Atlanta Hawks X handle posted.

“JONATHAN KUMINGA FROM 3/4 COURT 🤯 LOOKED LIKE AN ATTEMPTED PASS. ENDED UP AS AN INCREDIBLE TRIPLE,” the NBA wrote.

“Jonathan Kuminga just hit the longest shot in Hawks history – and the 8th longest in NBA history,” Polymarket Hoops pointed out, adding a historical context to Kuminga’s achievement.

“JONATHAN KUMINGA COULDN’T BELIEVE HE MADE THIS 😂😂,” Hater Report reacted, highlighting Kuminga’s stunned expression after the shot.

“Jonathan Kuminga just made about a 70-footer (clearly on accident) at the buzzer to put the Hawks up 19 at the end of the third. Hilarious play,” Brad Rowland noted.

“Jonathan Kuminga just made the 8th longest shot in NBA HISTORY 🤯,” the Real App X handle highlighted.

“Kuminga… HOW? 😳,” Legion Hoops wondered, echoing the disbelief many shared.

“Jonathan Kuminga throws the full court pass to Jock Landale and the ball goes in!! What a way for Jonathan Kuminga to hit a full court shot at the end of the 3rd quarter,” MrBuckBuckNBA explained the entire sequence.

“THIS HAIL MARY SHOT FROM JONATHAN KUMINGA 🤯,” Yahoo Sports shared.

With the Hawks, Kuminga is averaging 22.7 minutes per game and making a consistent impact with a plus-minus of +50. More importantly, the results are showing.

The Hawks have now won 11 straight games and hold a perfect 6-0 record since Kuminga joined the roster. They have surged to 38-31 on the season and currently sit eighth in the standings, tied with the Miami Heat for the seventh seed.

The win also handed the Mavs their 47th loss of the season, as the Hawks continued their late-season push.
