Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel has been making waves in the NBA. While Cooper Flagg was often seen as the more dominant rookie, especially after becoming the first draft pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Knueppel has proven just as dominant, if not more so.
Because of the way Knueppel has performed so far this season, he has caught the attention of NBA analyst Bill Simmons, who is now trying to find a unique nickname that best suits the rookie.

Kon Knueppel Leading Rookie Ladder
Hornets rookie Knueppel is slowly proving that he’s the best freshman this season. He’s currently leading the NBA’s rookie ladder, averaging 19.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. He’s also shooting at an efficient 43.5% from beyond the arc and 48.8% overall.
While Mavericks rookie Flagg arguably has better stats, averaging 20.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.2 steals, Knueppel’s efforts have translated into wins for the Hornets.
Charlotte is currently on a six-game winning streak with Knueppel leading the charge next to LaMelo Ball. Looking at Ball’s numbers, it’s not too far off from Knueppel’s. Ball is averaging 19.2 points, 7.4 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals.
Given the impact Knueppel has had on the court for the Hornets, his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. NBA analyst Simmons has acknowledged Knueppel’s talents and believes that he’s deserving of a solid nickname.
In a recent podcast episode of “The Ringer”, Simmons and his co-host creatively thought of several different nicknames that could best suit the Hornets’ rookie. Simmons read through several nickname suggestions before coming up with his own.
“There was a lot of Kon Knueppel suggestions,” Simmons said. “Peter T. said, Kon Snow, Bill’s illegitimate son in Charlotte, like Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. A lot of people going Defkon 3 or Defkon 7, which is his number. Not quite there. Kon Air? Doesn’t really work.”
“Then a couple of people suggested 2K,” Simmons continued. “2K’s good. ‘2K had 35 last night.’ … ‘Did you see 2K hit nine threes last night?’ It’s pretty good.”

Typically, when NBA players get a nickname from fans, analysts, or fellow players, it’s a sign that they have made it into the league. Having a nickname is one of the ultimate signs of respect in basketball, especially since it refers to something someone is significantly known for on the hardwood.
With Knueppel leading the rookie ladder and helping Ball lead the Hornets to a potential playoff berth this season, there’s no questioning that the rookie is deserving of the attention he currently has.
