NBA World Reacts to Dallas Mavericks Releasing Tyus Jones

Following Friday’s 124-105 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Mavs released Jones.

Jones had put up six points and four assists while shooting 2/7 from the field in 22 minutes of playing time.

Via Mavs PR: “The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have waived guard Tyus Jones. Jones (6-0, 196) appeared in eight games (two starts) with the Mavericks and averaged 3.9 points and 3.8 assists in 16.6 minutes per game.”

Here’s what people were saying about the news:

ESPN’s Shams Charania: “The Mavericks waived veteran guard Tyus Jones to create roster space for Nembhard. Dallas will have financial flexibility and a lottery pick this summer — allowing his deal to provide optionality in Nembhard’s long-term future with the Mavericks.”

Marc Stein: “Tyus Jones will be playoff-eligible with his next team because his release is taking place before Sunday’s buyout deadline. And the Mavericks will now have an open roster spot to work with no matter what Khris Middleton decides — stay or go — before Sunday’s 11:59 PM buzzer.”

Brett Siegel: “The Mavericks and Tyus Jones are parting ways before the March 1st waiver deadline, league sources told @ClutchPoints. First was @TheSteinLine . Although Jones is a player the Mavs wanted and did not intend on buying out, sources say the veteran wants to join a playoff team now.”

Jones was the 24th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

He has also played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, and Washington Wizards.

His career averages are 7.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 44.2% from the field and 37.2% from three-point range in 738 games.
