NBA Insider Outlines ‘Scenarios’ That Could ‘Steer Sacramento Toward Keeping’ Domantas Sabonis Despite ‘Fielding Trade Offers’

The Sacramento Kings are likely to retain Domantas Sabonis in the fold if a couple of scenarios go their way

The Domantas Sabonis trade rumors churned throughout the 2026 NBA trade deadline. And now, the Sacramento Kings superstar will remain with the side as they look to finish out the season.

Per recent reports, the team is not guaranteed to look at trade talks around the veteran big this offseason. The move comes after news that Sabonis was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

NBA Insider Highlights Scenarios that See the Kings Keeping Domantas Sabonis

In his latest on “The Stein Line,” league insider Marc Stein spoke of the Domantas Sabonis situation in Sacramento. “It is not seen as a certainty, according to one source briefed on the process, that the Kings will try again in the offseason to trade Domantas Sabonis after fielding in-season trade offers for the former All-Star big man,” Stein said.

The insider further detailed the scenarios that would see the Kings retain Sabonis’ services. One of them would be how they fare in the draft lottery in May and who they select.

“Washington and Toronto were among the teams that expressed interest in Sabonis before the Feb. 5 trade deadline. The Wizards pivoted to an Anthony Davis deal, and the Raptors’ pitches involved sending out long-term money that Sacramento, despite its interest in RJ Barrett, which we covered in a Sportsnet radio visit recently, was reluctant to absorb.”

Should a deal not materialize between the Raptors and the Kings in the Summer, there is one possibility that Sabonis will remain in Sacramento. It’s worth noting that he still has two seasons remaining in his $186M contract.

A good outcome in the lottery will surely alter the franchise’s plans for Sabonis. A high selection may see them eye a top prospect. This would mean more time for Sabonis in Sacramento. A lower pick, however, could see the team dealing the center in the summer and enter a rebuild.

Sabonis was a trade rumor staple ahead of the deadline, with links to multiple franchises. At the time of writing, the center is sidelined for the season after his meniscus surgery. The former All-Star big man averaged 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game in 19 games this season while shooting 54.3% from the field.

In his absence, the Kings have struggled this season, posting a paltry 12-46 record and sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference. Sharpshooter Zach LaVine leads the side with 19.2 points per game, while DeMar DeRozan is second on the list with 18.6 points per contest.
