Dwyane Wade Sends Heartfelt Message to Pat Riley Amid Lakers Legend’s Statue Unveiling

Dwyane Wade honored Pat Riley with an emotional speech at the legendary coach's statue unveiling, celebrating their lasting bond.

It feels like just yesterday that Dwyane Wade was standing on a stage, emotional over the unveiling of his statue at Kaseya Center in 2024. On Sunday, Wade was back on a stage, but this time it was not for himself. He was there for the man who helped shape everything he became in the league — Pat Riley.

Dwyane Wade Honors Pat Riley During Lakers Statue Ceremony

Riley had his statue unveiled at Star Plaza outside Crypto.com Arena. When Wade approached the podium with Riley seated nearby, the moment reflected the weight of everything the two had experienced together.

Wade explained that he and his family admired Riley long before he entered the NBA, and he spoke about the greatness Riley brought to the sport.

“I watched him go to Miami, and he fit. Zo (Alonzo Mourning), Tim Hardaway, the edge, expectations — he was the perfect man for that job. So when that man believed in me, when that man drafted me, when he gave me the opportunity to show the world who I was and who I could become, it simply changed my life. Pat gave me foundation, discipline, he gave me standards, he gave me love and care, even when it was tough,” Wade said during his speech.

“Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for demanding greatness. Thank you for the memories and the moments. Your impact didn’t stop with one team, one city, or one era. You changed the game. By building culture, setting standards, and showing what leadership looks like. Your legacy is excellence, your legacy is culture, and your legacy is forever. … You earned this. I love you.”

The Los Angeles Lakers honoring Riley with a statue was fitting given his historic run with the franchise. Riley took over as Lakers head coach during the 1981-82 season and reshaped the way the game was played. By the time his tenure with the Purple and Gold ended, Riley had helped deliver six championships.

He won one as a player in 1972, one as an assistant in 1980, and four more as head coach in 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988. In his final year coaching Los Angeles during the 1989-90 season, he earned NBA Coach of the Year honors.

Riley later moved to Miami, where his story and Wade’s became intertwined.

Riley joined the Heat in September 1995, and when the team drafted Wade in 2003, something special began. Riley coached Wade and Shaquille O’Neal to Miami’s first NBA title in 2006, with Wade earning Finals MVP honors.

As team president, Riley orchestrated one of the greatest roster moves in NBA history by bringing in LeBron James and Chris Bosh to join Wade. The trio led Miami to back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013.

Just as Wade honored Riley on Sunday, Riley reciprocated with respect and admiration for Wade. After all these years, the bond between the two remains strong — a connection that has endured and continues to symbolize lasting loyalty in the game.
