There have been numerous rumors and speculation regarding Jayson Tatum’s potential return this season. While no timeline has been announced for the Boston Celtics star’s comeback, there are indications that it could be approaching.
NBC recently released a preview video documenting Tatum’s recovery process over the past several months. One sequence featured the Celtics star’s prominent scar on his right ankle from the surgery he underwent following last year’s playoffs.
Jayson Tatum Shows Achilles Surgery Scar in Newly Released Footage
It has been nine months since Tatum last appeared on the NBA hardwood. In May, he ruptured his right Achilles tendon, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2025 NBA playoffs.
Given the severity of the injury, the Celtics star required immediate surgery. Historically, players who have sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon have faced lengthy recovery periods.
One of the most recent examples is Klay Thompson, who returned after 14 months of rehabilitation. With that precedent in mind, it remains uncertain whether Tatum will play this season.
However, recent media content suggests the Celtics star is gradually hinting at his return. NBC unveiled what appears to be a mini-documentary chronicling Tatum’s recovery journey. One sequence in the preview highlighted the scar he now bears on his right ankle following surgery.

Although the mini-documentary does not confirm his return this season, Tatum also appeared in a New Era advertisement. In the video, his voice-over described his determination to come back stronger than before, emphasizing that an Achilles injury will not prevent him from excelling.

“The experience has taught me a lot about myself,” Tatum said about his recovery. “Thirty-nine-and-a-half weeks out since surgery, and I can vividly remember being out of surgery, and, you know, not necessarily seeing myself being where I am today.
“So, I’m proud of myself for sticking with it and just literally taking it one day at a time, and that’s what I’mma keep doing going forward. The goal is always to be better than I was last year. Even with the injury, focusing on my game, my body, all those things, I’ll be back and be better.”
With these developments in mind, signs point toward Tatum making his return this season. Nevertheless, this remains speculative. Official confirmation must come from either the Celtics or Tatum himself.
