It has been nine months since Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum last appeared on the hardwood. In Game 4 of the second round of the 2025 NBA playoffs against the New York Knicks, Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon.
Since then, Tatum has undergone rigorous recovery sessions in an effort to return as quickly as possible. While many fans remain concerned that rust may hinder his performance, JT has assured them that circumstances will be different upon his return
Jayson Tatum Promises to Return Better Than Ever
Tatum is indisputably one of the NBA’s premier stars. In eight seasons, he has already earned six All-Star selections. In 2024, he achieved the ultimate goal by helping the Celtics secure the NBA championship.
However, following a severe injury such as a ruptured Achilles tendon, questions persist regarding whether Tatum will regain his prior form once he returns.
Despite the concerns, Tatum has pledged to stage a strong comeback and demonstrate that he has not lost his rhythm.
In a recent New Era advertisement, Tatum appeared as the brand’s endorser. His voice-over in the video reflected on the challenges he encountered during recovery.
“The experience has taught me a lot about myself,” Tatum said about his recovery. “Thirty-nine-and-a-half weeks out since surgery, and I can vividly remember being out of surgery, and, you know, not necessarily seeing myself being where I am today.
“So, I’m proud of myself for sticking with it and just literally taking it one day at a time, and that’s what I’mma keep doing going forward. The goal is always to be better than I was last year. Even with the injury, focusing on my game, my body, all those things, I’ll be back and be better.”

At present, there are no official announcements regarding Tatum’s return. Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens stated that he does not intend to rush Tatum back until he is at “110%.”
Given that, the likelihood of his return this season is slim. Boston may anticipate his comeback next season, particularly as the team continues to perform well under Jaylen Brown’s leadership. The Celtics are currently second in the Eastern Conference.
Should Tatum return this season, his comeback would rank among the fastest. The late Kobe Bryant returned from an Achilles injury after eight months.
