Dwyane Wade is arguably one of the best shooting guards in NBA history. Some may argue that he’s on par with the likes of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in terms of skills at the shooting guard position. In 2023, Wade was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, forever cementing his legacy as one of the NBA’s all-time greats. However, being the embodiment of greatness doesn’t mean he hasn’t done anything flawed. Recently, Wade recalled a questionable decision he made after the 2004 Olympics concluded.
Dwyane Wade Gave Away His Bronze Medal After the 2004 Olympics
Back in 2004, Wade just concluded his rookie season and was already selected to represent Team USA in the Olympics as part of the men’s basketball team. While it was a clear sign of his talent, it seems his talent consumed him and negatively affected his mental state.
In a recent episode of Wade’s podcast, ‘WY Network’, the basketball legend shockingly revealed that he gave away his bronze medal. The reason was that Wade wasn’t satisfied and would’ve preferred to keep it if it were gold.
Wade acknowledged how toxic his mindset was back then. He admitted that he grew up in a basketball culture that taught him to always aim for the top prize and never settle for less. That type of mentality led him to make drastic decisions, such as giving away his achievements.
“I don’t have my bronze medal,” Wade shared. “I was so young and dumb, I didn’t appreciate the Bronze medal, and I gave it away. We were conditioned to think it’s either Gold or you’re nothing.”
“I just gave it away,” Wade continued. “Anyway, stupid. Your ego and pride are so tough that you feel like you’re above a Bronze medal because you’ve been conditioned for the masses of the world that you have to be this or you’re nothing.”

Ultimately, Wade achieved his goal of winning the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. He was part of the legendary ‘Redeem Team’, which is now well documented in sports history.
