But Sam Amick of The Athletic then reported that Leonard’s uncle Dennis Robertson, often called “Uncle Dennis”, delivered a list of demands that blindsided the Lakers’ front office.
The requests included partial ownership of the Lakers, a private jet, a luxury home, and guaranteed off-court endorsement income. All of these demands directly violated the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.

Lakers governor Jeanie Buss denied them outright, knowing any agreement would have brought swift and severe penalties from the league.
Robertson reportedly made similar pitches to the Toronto Raptors and their owner, Larry Tanenbaum, hoping to secure long-term benefits beyond standard contracts. The NBA did investigate those reports but ultimately issued no penalties, citing a lack of evidence or intent to bypass the CBA.
In the end, Leonard signed with the Clippers on a three-year, $103 million deal, with Ballmer pulling off the blockbuster trade for Paul George to seal the decision. Leonard has since re-signed twice with the Clippers — first in 2021 on a four-year extension, and then again in 2024 on a three-year deal that keeps him in Los Angeles through the 2026-27 season.
The resurfacing of those demands is timely, given that Leonard and the Clippers are now facing fresh allegations.
Could the Clippers Face Punishment Over Kawhi Leonard’s Alleged Cap Circumvention?
The new controversy stems from a Wednesday episode of the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast. Torre reported that Leonard had signed a four-year, $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a San Francisco-based environmental start-up partially funded by a $50 million investment from Steve Ballmer.
According to seven former Aspiration finance employees interviewed for the podcast, the agreement was described internally as a “no-show job”, a contract that existed on paper but required little to no marketing work from Leonard. The implication is that the deal was designed to help the Clippers circumvent the NBA salary cap.
Aspiration, a non-profit, filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. In its paperwork, Leonard, his agent, and Robertson were all listed — further fueling questions about the legitimacy of the arrangement.
The NBA is formally investigating the deal, and the potential punishments are severe. As per Section 3 of Article XIII list of the collective bargaining agreement, possible penalties include hefty fines, loss of draft picks, suspension of executives, and in the most extreme scenario, voiding Leonard’s contract. Leonard himself could face a fine and be required to return money tied to the Aspiration deal unless he can prove he was unaware of wrongdoing.
The Clippers, however, have denied the allegations outright. “Neither the Clippers nor Steve Ballmer circumvented the salary cap,” the team said. “The notion that Steve invested in Aspiration to funnel money to Kawhi Leonard is absurd. Steve invested because Aspiration’s co-founders presented themselves as committed to doing right by their customers while protecting the environment.”
