‘Never Forgotten’ – Celtics Fans Bid Goodbye to Former Owner Wyc Grousbeck After $6.1 Billion Sale

As Wyc Grousbeck ends his 23-year-long tenure as owner of the Boston Celtics, fans bid adieu to one of their own as a new era starts in Boston.

After 23 years of ownership that brought two NBA championships to Boston, Wyc Grousbeck has officially passed the torch. The Boston Celtics completed their sale to Bill Chisholm’s investment group, marking the end of one era and the beginning of another.

For Celtics fans, the transition brings gratitude for Grousbeck’s legacy and excitement for what deep pockets and championship ambitions might deliver next.

What Makes Wyc Grousbeck a Boston Legend?

Grousbeck’s tenure as the lead owner and governor of the Boston Celtics started in 2002 when he mortgaged his house to form the group that acquired the franchise. Under his leadership, the Celtics won two NBA championships (in 2008 and 2024) and made the playoffs in 20 of his 23 seasons as owner.

On Tuesday, the sale of the team was finalized by the group led by Chisholm, who will take over as governor. Fans celebrated the financial firepower the group brings and the possibility of a team-owned arena in the future.

However, they made sure to honor Grousbeck, declaring he will never be forgotten. “Wyc you will be missed and never forgotten king,” said one user.

How Could a New Arena Transform the Celtics’ Future?

While the financial injection ensures the Celtics’ competitiveness moving forward, the bigger opportunity might come through arena revenues if the new ownership decides to build its own facility. The Celtics are tenants in TD Garden, with their lease running through 2036.

One user was excited for the days ahead, while also thanking the outgoing owner for his contributions. “Different Direction full steam ahead. Thanks you Wyc for everything you did for the Celtics 2 championships and awesome memories. Now to Chrisholm lets get it rolling,” they wrote.

Being tenants saves the Celtics energy on management and maintenance, but they miss out on the revenue streams generated by the venue.

A team-owned arena would create additional income for the Celtics, money that could fuel their championship pursuits. The fans understand exactly what this could mean. “New era for our team,” one of the fans celebrated on X.

What Role Will Grousbeck Play Going Forward?

Since Chisholm assumed the governor role that Grousbeck was expected to retain until the 2027-28 season, fans naturally questioned the former owner’s future with the organization. “So is Wyc staying?” asked one user.

Grousbeck will stay on as an alternate governor, co-owner, and CEO. He’s expected to work alongside Chisholm and the existing management to handle day-to-day operations and ensure a smooth ownership transition.

“The Celtics have been my life’s work for the past 23 years. This incredible ride is now continuing. I am fired up to be shoulder to shoulder with Bill as we pull every lever to go after another banner. There is nothing better than winning,” said Grousbeck.

Celtics fans can take comfort knowing that Chisholm has been a lifelong supporter of the team. Their franchise is now run by owners who see the Celtics as more than just a business investment. Although ownership may have changed hands, the mission stays the same in Boston.

“New Owner, Same Goal, Banner 19,” posted another fan.

“This truly is a dream come true for me and my family,” said Chisholm. “I feel so fortunate to be here as part of this new investor group, who are accomplished, driven people who care deeply about the Celtics and the Boston community.

“On behalf of our group, I am thrilled to partner with Wyc, Brad Stevens and Rich Gotham to move this outstanding organization forward. We are committed to building on the legacy of the Celtics and raising banners, and I can’t wait for the team to get back out there this fall.”

With Jayson Tatum out for the season and the Celtics going through a significant roster shuffle, Chisholm’s first season as owner won’t be easy. However, with their championship hunger established, seeing Boston’s moves to launch this new era will be fascinating.
