Jonathan Kuminga’s relationship with the Golden State Warriors is reaching a breaking point. The young forward and the franchise remain locked in a contract standoff that’s growing more uncomfortable by the day.
While negotiations drag on, one NBA insider thinks there’s a simple way to end this mess and get both sides what they need.
What Is the “Easy Solution” to the Jonathan Kuminga Contract Standoff?
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne believes the Warriors can solve this problem with a creative contract structure. During a recent appearance on NBA Today, she outlined what she called an “easy solution” that could satisfy both parties.
Shelburne suggested the Warriors offer Kuminga a “two-plus-one” deal — two guaranteed years with a player option for the third. This approach would give Kuminga more security and control while keeping him in Golden State’s long-term plans.
“I think he’s going to be on the Warriors. And the only question is how much they are paying him. I think there’s an easy solution here that the Warriors should give him an extra year. It will be like a two plus one where he has a little more control over his grits, a little more guaranteed money,” she explained.
“And I do think, Warriors see him as somebody who’s… somebody who they want around for a long time. Because they are 35-year-olds on their team,” Shelburne continued.
The structure would address Kuminga’s concerns about job security while giving the Warriors flexibility. More importantly, it would signal that Golden State views him as a core piece rather than trade bait.
Shelburne also revealed that Warriors owner Joe Lacob remains firmly in Kuminga’s corner. According to her reporting, Lacob has personally protected the forward from trade discussions over the past year because he believes in his potential.
“And I know that owner Joe Lacob has told him this. He loves Kuminga. He’s the reason they’ve never included him in the trades, because they see the potential in him. But the question is not whether he’s going to be back, but what kind of attitude he’s going to have.”
Why Is Jonathan Kuminga Rejecting the Warriors’ Current Offer?
The Warriors have reportedly offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million contract with a team option on the second year. That proposal has created significant frustration in Kuminga’s camp, who see it as setting him up to be traded mid-season.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported that Kuminga’s representatives have strong feelings about how the deal would position their client within the organization. Their language reveals just how unhappy they are with the current terms.
“Kuminga wants more of a player-friendly deal; more of a signal that he’s a building block and not just a trade asset; the word I’ve heard from the Kuminga side is ‘pawn,'” Slater explained.
That word choice — “pawn” — shows how Kuminga views the Warriors’ approach. He feels the team is treating him as a movable piece rather than someone they want to build around.
Slater continued, “He doesn’t want to sign this two-year, $45 million deal with a team option where he is clearly just being used to be traded mid-season. That’s not something he wants to sign up for.”
The tension goes beyond just money and contract terms. Kuminga was the seventh overall pick in 2021 and believes he’s proven enough to earn either a long-term commitment or a short-term deal with a player option. The Warriors, however, seem reluctant to give him that level of control.
Adding another layer to the situation, Shelburne warned that Kuminga’s attitude could become a problem if he feels undervalued. With the Warriors entering a crucial season while their veteran core ages, chemistry issues on the bench could derail their championship hopes.
For now, both sides remain stuck in their positions, with no clear resolution in sight.
