NBA Insider Reveals Major Disagreement Between Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga in Contract Negotiations

All you need to know about the Golden State Warriors' tense contract standoff with Jonathan Kuminga, the trade interest from rival teams, and more.

The Golden State Warriors find themselves locked in an intense negotiation with Jonathan Kuminga that could define both their immediate championship hopes and long-term flexibility. NBA insider Jake Fischer describes the ongoing contract talks as a “staring contest,” with neither side willing to compromise on crucial terms that could reshape the franchise’s future.

What’s Causing the Standoff Between the Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga?

The heart of this dispute centers on contract structure rather than money. Fischer revealed on Thursday’s episode of Bleacher Report’s “Insider Notebook” that the Warriors are holding firm on making the second year of Kuminga’s $45 million offer a team option, while his camp pushes for a player option.

“I think that Jonathan Kuminga’s side would take this one-plus-one situation with Golden State, this two-year, $45 million offer that’s been on the table if he were to get a player option in year two,” Fischer said. “But I was told yesterday (August 6) from various sources that Golden State is going to be holding firm that the second year is going to be a team option. And that’s kind of where the staring contest is at.”

This structural disagreement reflects deeper questions about Kuminga’s role and value. The highly athletic 6-foot-7 wing has shown flashes of star potential with the Warriors, but head coach Steve Kerr has not completely placed his trust in the 22-year-old. Despite this hesitation, Kuminga remains a valuable piece in Golden State’s rotation.

Meanwhile, both the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns have pursued sign-and-trade scenarios for the restricted free agent. However, the Warriors have rejected their proposals so far, holding out for first-round draft picks or blue-chip talent. The message is clear: if Golden State is going to lose Kuminga, they want meaningful compensation in return.

Why Are the Warriors Taking This Hardline Approach?

The Warriors’ stance makes strategic sense from multiple angles. Fischer noted that Kerr wants a starter for Kuminga who can play behind Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green as the team contends for another NBA title. Simply put, the Warriors don’t want to lose Kuminga for nothing.

Beyond the immediate roster concerns, there’s a bigger financial chess game at play. The insider explained that from a trade flexibility standpoint, the Warriors need Kuminga to be earning a much higher salary than the roughly $8 million qualifying offer. If Kuminga’s contract value were closer to $22–25 million per year, it would make it much easier for Golden State to match salaries in a trade for a star player like LeBron James or a potential future target like Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Fischer believes that Kuminga’s camp is using the threat of taking the qualifying offer as leverage in contract talks with the Warriors. If Kuminga actually accepted the qualifying offer, it would be a one-year deal before hitting unrestricted free agency, effectively signaling that he doesn’t feel valued by Golden State.

From the insider’s perspective, that would be a significant loss for the Warriors. In such a scenario, the likelihood that Kuminga leaves the team entirely increases exponentially once he’s free to sign anywhere, unless the upcoming 2024-25 season turns out perfectly. The franchise would lose a young, talented player without receiving any assets in return.

Adding complexity to the situation, neither the Kings nor the Phoenix have put anything enticing on the table for the Warriors. Fischer expects these negotiations to stretch into September, noting that almost all restricted free-agent situations follow similar patterns.
