LeBron James has been the face of the Los Angeles Lakers for seven seasons, but that era is clearly shifting. With Luka Dončić now leading the franchise following a massive $165 million extension, questions have swirled about how James feels about taking a backseat in what may be his final years.
NBA insider Shams Charania has now shed light on that very topic, and his comments may just calm the storm of speculation surrounding the King’s future in Los Angeles.

How Does LeBron James Feel About the Lakers’ Luka Dončić Pivot?
The Lakers made headlines on Saturday, August 2, officially inking Dončić to a massive three-year, $165 million contract extension that signals a clear future direction for the franchise.
The deal, including a player option for 2028, potentially sets him up for a five-year, $417 million mega contract. The Lakers are building around their 26-year-old star, even as James remains on the roster.
This obviously fueled speculation over his position in LA. The speculation only grew after James didn’t attend Dončić’s introductory press conference following the deal.
However, NBA insider Charania curbed the rumors over any possible rift between James and Dončić or the team. On ESPN’s Get Up, Charania revealed that James has been “supportive and understanding” of the Lakers pivoting toward a Dončić-led future. “He wants to end his career on his own terms,” Charania added, noting that the Lakers are aware and respectful of that.
“I am told he’s been supportive and understanding that the Lakers are moving more towards a Luka Dončić-led future,” Charania revealed.
“Now, what does that mean for LeBron James? He’s opted in, so technically he’s a Laker. How will he finish his career though? Is he gonna play Year 23 and finish out in L.A. and that’s gonna be it? At the end of the day, I think the Lakers even understand he’s gonna end his career on his own terms. He wants to end his career on his own terms and I think he’s earned the right to do that. We just don’t know what that looks like yet.”
Though James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025 season, he has yet to commit beyond that. The lack of an extension, paired with trade rumors, has left many wondering if he’s planning a final move to chase one more ring before retiring.
How Is Dončić Handling His New Role as the Lakers’ Franchise Player?
The press conference announcing Dončić’s extension was a Lakers showcase, attended by teammates Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, and Adou Thiero. But fans immediately noticed that James wasn’t in the room, fueling online chatter about a potential rift between the two stars.
NBA insider Marc Stein later reported that James FaceTimed Dončić that morning to personally congratulate him on the deal, suggesting there’s no bad blood behind the scenes.
Dončić’s arrival in LA was a franchise-defining moment, and his emergence as the new face of the franchise naturally shifts focus away from James, who has led the team through four playoff runs and delivered a title in 2020. But it’s not a rivalry. Dončić’s camp insists there’s deep admiration.
“Luka loves playing with LeBron and has learned so much from him,” said his agent, Lara Beth Seager, via ESPN. “He considers it an honor to be his teammate.”
That respect shows. Even as Dončić takes the lead, the Lakers’ locker room appears united. The future may be Dončić’s, but it’s clear that James’s presence still looms large, just as it should for a player who reshaped the franchise.
