After signing a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Dončić was interviewed and shared more on the thought process that led to him making this significant decision.
The past six months have been quite dramatic and eventful for the NBA superstar. He was coming off a season in which he carried the Dallas Mavericks all the way to the 2024 NBA Finals. However, the Mavericks decided to move in another direction and traded him to the Lakers in return for Anthony Davis.
Since there was no way to tell if Dončić would stay with the Lakers once his contract ended, many wondered if the team would be able to retain him for the future. After he signed a three-year contract worth $165 million, Dončić spoke about his decision.

Luka Dončić Is Fully Committed to the Los Angeles Lakers
Given that Dončić spent his entire career with the Mavs, being forced to move to a new city and play for a rival team undoubtedly caught him off guard. However, he seems to have fully adjusted to his new situation.
During a recent interview, Dončić revealed that the response from the Lakers’ fanbase upon his arrival already made it clear to him that he wanted to play for them.
“It was easy. I mean, it was easy, you know, even, like I said, up there after my first game, how they received me, you know, getting to know Rob, getting to know everybody in the organization. It was really an easy decision.”

The Lakers star also revealed that he had a small circle that he consulted privately before making the decision to sign his contract extension. The circle involved people such as his sports agent and personal trainers. He was then asked about his thoughts on the upgrades that the Lakers have made to their roster this offseason.
The Lakers’ most important acquisitions so far are Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton. Both NBA stars can improve the Lakers’ defense, an issue that was exposed in their postseason matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dončić is optimistic and believes that both Smart and Ayton can help the Lakers contend for an NBA championship in the upcoming 2025-2026 NBA season. He also revealed that his own offseason training routine has increased his overall confidence and belief in his abilities.
The Lakers finished last season as the third seed in the West and undoubtedly have the talent and experience to win an NBA championship. Fans are left wondering what their roster will be able to accomplish in a stacked and competitive Western Conference.
