WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray has joined the chorus of critics slamming the booking of Goldberg vs Gunther. The match set for the World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12th is ridiculously booked, according to Ray.
Bully Ray Doesn’t Seek Logic In Goldberg vs. Gunther
On Busted Open Radio, Ray called the abrupt announcement “insulting” and a clear violation of logical wrestling storytelling. He expressed deep frustration with WWE’s decision to push Goldberg into the title picture without any narrative basis, arguing that such moves undermine the integrity of the product. One thing to be remembered is that Goldberg has been in such situations multiple times. When he wanted a title shot, his “You’re Next” line just popped in, and the match became official.
Ray acknowledged wrestling as the epitome of sports entertainment, aided by creative freedom, but insisted this case goes too far. “I despise the lack of logic in wrestling,” he said, stressing that the decision lacks even the slightest justification. He compared fans’ acceptance of such storytelling to voters repeatedly reelecting an underperforming politician.
“Did Gunther issue an open challenge? No. Did Gunther say, ‘No matter who it is… You get the next title shot? No… Who made the match? Why did they make the match? What’s the logic behind them saying yes?” – Bully Ray said.
Ray warned that as long as the WWE Universe tolerates these creative missteps and continues engaging with the product, WWE has little incentive to change its approach.
He urged fans to demand better, suggesting that only a collective backlash, potentially walking away from the product, would force WWE to prioritize coherent storytelling.
How Would Bully Ray Book This Goldberg vs. Gunther Scenario?
Going ahead in that discussion, Bully Ray didn’t just criticize the abrupt Goldberg vs. Gunther booking for Saturday Night’s Main Event; he proposed a compelling alternative to make the World Heavyweight Championship match feel earned. Ray outlined a scenario where Goldberg’s challenge unfolds as seen, but backstage, RAW General Manager Adam Pearce rejects the match, citing it needs proper authorization.

Goldberg, undeterred, demands an immediate answer. A camera then follows him storming through the arena, passing by Triple H, WWE’s Chief Content Officer. Triple H removes his headphones, stands face-to-face with Goldberg, and seals the match with a handshake, a simple yet effective story beat that grounds the announcement in narrative logic.
