John Cena vs. Randy Orton: WWE Backlash Statistics, Results, And Rivalries Comparison

John Cena and Randy Orton will write the final chapter of their legendary rivalry as they collide for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WWE Backlash 2025 Premium Live Event.

The Franchise Player and The Viper will face each other ‘one last time,’ as the former is going to retire in December 2025. The 17-time World Champion will compete at Backlash for the first time since 2009, while Orton will compete at Backlash for the third time in the last four years. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some interesting facts from their Backlash record.

John Cena and Randy Orton’s Record at Backlash

John Cena and Randy Orton have struggled to maintain a winning record when it comes to Backlash. The Last Real Champion competed at the Premium Live Event five times between 2003 and 2009 but won only twice in his five matches.

Every time Cena competed at Backlash, a major World Title was on the line, but he was victorious only twice. In 2006, he survived a Triple-Threat Match with Triple H and Edge, while a year later, he stood tall in a brutal Fatal-4 Way Match with Orton, Edge, and Shawn Michaels.

Like in Cena’s case, the majority of those matches at Backlash were for a major WWE Title, while his last two matches in 2022 and 2024 saw The Viper in tag team action against Bloodline members.

John Cena Takes Shot at Randy Orton Ahead of Title Match at Backlash

The Franchise Player and The Viper had one final face-off on the May 9 episode of SmackDown, where Cena took a shot at his career rival, making it clear that he was going to end Orton’s legacy at Backlash.
Orton hit Cena with an RKO and made it clear that he is ready to dethrone the veteran just three weeks after he became a 17-time World Champion at WrestleMania 41. WWE Creative has yet to provide any hints at how they plan the match to end and whether The Last Real Champion will retain the title.
