John Cena Missed Out Major Opportunity To Personalize Feud With Randy Orton, Believes WWE Veteran

John Cena and Randy Orton, ahead of their match at Backlash for the Undisputed WWE Champion, met once again on this week’s Friday Night SmackDown. The 17-time World Champion took some personal jabs at his opponent, but a wrestling veteran believes he could go more personal.

Vince Russo Believes Cena Could Have Made His Rivalry More Personal With Randy Orton

On the May 8 episode of SmackDown, John Cena delivered another cold promo, which he began by telling everyone, “Your childhood dies tomorrow.” Cena, after reminding everyone about his long history with Orton, got too personal. The Last Real Champion made fun of his 2006 drug test failure and even dragged Orton’s grandfather Bob Orton Sr. into the mix. Then he talked about his father Cowboy Bob Orton Jr., saying that people know him only because he “knocked up Randy’s mom.”

Despite saying such things, former WWE writer Vince Russo, who appeared on a recent episode of the “Sportskeeda WrestleBinge” podcast, is still not convinced. He believes that roasting Orton’s father wasn’t enough—he should have visited him personally to make this feud more intense and personal.

“Remember when this thing was set up, what did Cena say? ‘I am gonna wipe out Orton’s family history.’ Then what you do is, let’s see a package of Orton’s history. Let’s see Cowboy Bob, let’s see what Cena is talking about. Then, one week, let Cena pay Bob Orton a visit. Let him knock on the door to tell him personally what he’s doing. These are things they could do other than put Cena in the ring to cut the same promo,” Russo said.

Randy Orton Tricked John Cena on SmackDown

The Cenation Leader, in his promo, claimed that Orton isn’t on the show because he is in St. Louis spending time with his family. But when he was done talking, someone in Viper’s ring gear appeared behind Cena and tried to give him an RKO, but The Last Real Champion, countering the move, hit him with an Attitude Adjustment.

As Cena was celebrating that he countered the move, the real Randy Orton arrived right behind him, delivering his signature RKO. He then picked up the title, kissed it, and raised it high to show what fans might witness at Backlash.

Cena vs. Orton is the most talked-about rivalry heading into Backlash, and there are countless possibilities for how things might unfold. Possibly the famous rapper Travis Scott, who is reportedly planning his in-ring debut, may return to once again help Cena. Or Cody Rhodes, who hasn’t shown up since his loss at WrestleMania, may make a surprise appearance to stand in The Viper’s corner. Or perhaps fans get to witness the much-awaited return of The Rock, who may show up to continue his plans with the 17-time World Champion.
