The latest edition of Monday Night RAW saw Gunther become a two-time World Heavyweight Champion. ‘The Ring General’ ended Jey Uso’s title reign by making him pass out to a sleeper in the ring. While this win puts him back at the main event table, it seems not everyone was impressed.
Uso and Gunther wrestled a hard-fought back-and-forth match. The contest saw many near falls and had the crowd on the edge of their seats until the very end. Despite an impressive performance, Gunther revealed that nobody was present backstage to celebrate his win.
Gunther Doesn’t “Need Friends”
Over the years, it has become a tradition to celebrate first title wins or major milestones backstage once the wrestler returns from the ring. Just a few months ago, Jey Uso was greeted backstage by his family and other WWE stars after winning the Royal Rumble.
But after Gunther claimed his second World title, he walked backstage to see everyone had left. Speaking on the RAW Recap, he said, “When somebody achieves something, everybody is there, hugging and all of that. But I walked backstage today, and there was no one. Everybody left. Guess all the other guys saw it on the screen, saw the finish, and left.”

Though this does paint a sad picture, Gunther doesn’t seem to mind it. In fact, he relishes this. He added, “I like that. I enjoy that position. I don’t need friends. I’m not here to make friends. I’m not here to bond and have a lifelong friendship. I’ve a few friends, I’ve a great family, that’s all I need. I’m here for business.”
Gunther clearly means business. With this win and the manner of it, a message has been sent to the WWE roster that he isn’t here to play around. The question now is, who takes the title from him?
Who’s Next For Gunther?
It is likely that Jey Uso will take some much-needed time off following his title loss. This eliminates the possibility of an immediate rematch. So, who challenges Gunther next?
One name that will intrigue fans is Goldberg. The former WCW Champion is keen to have a retirement match and has a history with Gunther. The match has been teased a few times, and there is a good chance we may get to see it next month.
Saturday Night’s Main Event takes place on July 12 in Atlanta, Goldberg’s hometown. A feud leading to his retirement angle in front of his family and friends could be the perfect send-off for him.
Apart from this, you have got Seth Rollins lurking with the Money in the Bank briefcase. Although he teased cashing in on John Cena on RAW, he could very well pivot his attention to the new World Heavyweight Champion.
Whatever happens, the next few weeks could define how Gunther’s title reign would unravel. His last world title run was not overwhelmingly well received, but he has the chance to do it this time.
