Goldberg vs. Gunther Only Looks Good on Paper, Claims WWE Veteran

Goldberg could return to WWE this year to have his retirement match, with Gunther likely being his final opponent. The WWE Hall of Famer could show up at Backlash tonight when The Ring General takes on RAW commentator Pat McAfee. Goldberg and Gunther have already teased a match after a confrontation they had at Bad Blood in Atlanta last year.

WWE Veteran Believes a Gunther vs. Goldberg Match Looks Good ‘Only on Paper’

WWE Veteran Dutch Mantell shared his doubts on whether a match between the WWE legend and the former World Heavyweight Champion is the best option for WWE. Mantell went on to explain that Goldberg can’t work matches that last more than two minutes and that would be a problem in a feud with The Ring General.

“Goldberg and Gunther on paper, it looks good, and probably at the box office and the buys, it looks good. I can’t imagine what type of match they would have. As long as Goldberg has been in this profession, he’s never learned it. He’s gone out there and what for almost a year and a half or even maybe around that time; it was a minute, 90 seconds at most. So, what he didn’t learn how to operate and get himself over in a short amount of time, because everybody started expecting that. When he goes five minutes or longer, now he blows up,” Mantell said on the latest episode of “BrowDown” with Mac Davis and Vince Russo.

After their verbal confrontation at Bad Blood, it seems like Goldberg’s retirement match in WWE will be against Gunther.

Goldberg Reveals What a Match With Goldberg Would Mean to Him

Goldberg would welcome a match with the former World Heavyweight Champion and explained that facing him would be like ‘passing the torch’ to him. During a recent appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” the WCW legend said:

“If it was, then I guess I could look at it like I’m kind of passing the torch. He’s a young talent, comparatively. He’s part of the new generation. They need to be…I’m not gonna say lifted up, but I think if that were the case, if it was Gunther and I, it would be logical. There’s some heat there, obviously, it’s already been placed. He’s the new generation, I’m the old generation. It’s kind of like a passing of a torch in a way,” Goldberg said. [H/T: WrestleZone]

This Saturday in St. Louis, we could have a clearer look at whether Gunther vs. Goldberg is the plan for WWE Creative.
