Alberto El Patron, known as Alberto Del Rio from his WWE days, is one of the most well-known superstars in wrestling. But he has also been surrounded by controversy, and recently, the Mexican star was banned from wrestling for his actions toward the crowd.
Alberto Del Rio Banned From Wrestling for 6 Months
During a Lucha Libre AAA event on March 14 in Tijuana, Mexico, Patron wrestled El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., a Mexican luchador, when fans began causing a disturbance, throwing coins and beer into the ring.
The former WWE champion grew frustrated and crossed the barricade to confront the crowd. Patron threw a chair, which accidentally hit a woman in the face, injuring her. She was later taken to a hospital. Moments later, fans threw a chair and other objects at him.
Many fans in attendance recorded the incident and shared videos on social media, showing how Patron lost control and entered the crowd, escalating the chaos.

Fans have shared their thoughts online, with some saying the crowd’s behavior was inappropriate, while others believe wrestlers should never attack the audience, no matter the situation.
There have been many heated moments between wrestlers and fans over the years, and this incident is sure to be remembered.
For attacking a fan, the AAA Mega Champion has been banned from wrestling in Tijuana for six months (180 days). However, the ban applies only to the city, meaning the Mexican wrestler can still compete elsewhere.
Patron is expected to appear in upcoming AAA events in Ensenada, Rosarito, and Baja California.
Del Rio’s Controversial Past
This isn’t the first time Patron has faced suspension. In 2016, while with WWE, he was suspended for violating the wellness policy and left the company shortly after.
Patron’s controversies aren’t limited to wrestling, either. In 2020, he was arrested on serious charges, including sexual assault and kidnapping.
Before these issues, Patron had a successful WWE career. However, many fans believe the 47-year-old wrestler’s career is in serious trouble, and it remains to be seen if he can rebuild his reputation in the wrestling industry.
As Del Rio in WWE, Patron won the Royal Rumble match in 2011 to earn a world championship match at WrestleMania 27. It was the largest Royal Rumble match ever at that time (40 members). However, he fell short in usurping Edge as the World Heavyweight Championship at The Show of Shows.
Nevertheless, Del Rio would win the Money in the Bank ladder match later that year and successfully cashed in against CM Punk at SummerSlam. Del Rio would go on to become a four-time world champion with WWE before departing the company.
