AEW Introduces New Championship on Dynamite

AEW’s next pay-per-view offering, All In: Texas, is a month away. The event already has a couple of blockbuster matches lined up, with AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defending his title against Adam ‘Hangman’ Page and Toni Storm putting her Women’s World title on the line against Mercedes Mone.

Well, another massive match has been added to the card, and it will feature a new championship.

AEW Announces Big Match and New Championship on Dynamite

During this week’s AEW Summer Blockbuster four-hour special event on TBS, from Portland, Oregon, fans were in for a surprise.

AEW International Champion Kenny Omega and Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada were together in the ring for the contract signing of their ‘Winner Takes All’ match at the July 12 All In PPV.

During the signing, they were joined by Tony Schiavone, who revealed that the winner of their bout will be crowned the new AEW Unified Champion. Schiavone also revealed the new title belt that they will be competing for.

A unification title bout between Okada and Omega is a mouth-watering prospect for the wrestling fans, and they did get a glimpse of what is to come during the show. After signing the contract, the two stars shook hands and were about to get into it when Don Callis interrupted.

Omega took an exception to this, only to be attacked by Okada with the Continental title belt from behind. Okada beat down Omega and was then handed a collapsible baton by Callis as he targeted his rival’s diverticulitis-impacted midsection. Okada eventually left Omega in a mess with blood sprouting from his mouth.

This sets the stage for what promises to be another glorious chapter in their epic rivalry.

Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada Have Had a Storied Rivalry

The rivalry between Omega and Okada goes back to 2017 and began in Japan’s NJPW. They first clashed at Wrestle Kingdom 11 when Okada put his IWGP Heavyweight Championship on the line against G1 winner Omega.

It went down as a classic for ages, with Dave Meltzer rating it a record six stars as Okada retained his title. A few months later, they met again at NJPW Dominion 6.11. With expectations being high, the two put on another blockbuster back-and-forth contest. The match eventually ended in a 60-minute time limit draw.

Their third clash of 2017 was the G1 Climax Block B Semi-Final that saw Omega finally get a win over Okada following one final One-Winged Angel.

The fourth and last match between the two stars to date came in 2018 at Dominion 6.9. Okada entered the Two out of Three Falls match as the defending IWGP Heavyweight Champion.

Okada managed to win the first fall, leaving Omega with an uphill battle. The second fall saw a lot of storytelling, drama, and even callbacks as Omega leveled things. The match culminated with a V-Trigger and a One-Winged Angel to give Omega a monumental win. The match earned a staggering seven stars from Meltzer.

AEW fans will hope for a similar showdown in Texas when the two stars resume their rivalry.
