3 Most Controversial Moments in WWE Money in the Bank History

WWE Money in the Bank is right around the corner. The annual show debuted in 2010 and has been a big part of the company’s schedule each year. Its impact has led many people to consider it an unofficial addition to the “Big Four” traditional premium live events (PLE), now calling it the “Big Five.”

But with 15 editions in the books, it hasn’t been all clean finishes and feel-good moments. Money in the Bank has had its fair share of controversy. With the 16th edition set for June 7, let’s revisit three of the most talked-about moments in the event’s history.

Nexus Costs John Cena the Main Event at WWE Money in the Bank’s Debut

The first-ever Money in the Bank PLE in 2010 had high stakes and drama.

John Cena challenged WWE Champion Sheamus in a Steel Cage match. Chaos struck when the match looked like it might settle a months-long feud. The Nexus, a dominant faction led by Wade Barrett, interfered and cost Cena the match. Sheamus escaped the cage to retain his title.

Fans were left without a definitive winner, sparking frustration. While Nexus would stay in the spotlight and Cena remained the focal point, many felt the finish robbed the match of its proper payoff. Eventually, Cena would take down each group member, but not without controversy.

Brock Lesnar Shows Up at the Last Minute, Steals Briefcase

At the 10th edition of Money in the Bank in 2019, the men’s ladder match featured Ali, Andrade, Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin, Finn Bálor, and Ricochet. One name not advertised? Brock Lesnar.

As Ali climbed the ladder with victory in reach, The Beast made a surprise return, sprinted down the ramp, shoved Ali off the ladder, and grabbed the briefcase.

The crowd was stunned, and not in a good way. Lesnar didn’t need the win, and fans were upset that a part-time star took the spotlight meant for full-time talent. The moment remains one of the most divisive in event history.

WWE Does Not Bank on LA Knight’s Growing Popularity

LA Knight had the WWE Universe firmly behind him heading into Money in the Bank 2023. His charisma, mic skills, and rising popularity made him the fan-favorite to win the briefcase at The O2 Arena in London.

But WWE had other plans.

Damian Priest walked out as Mr. Money in the Bank in a swerve, disappointing Knight’s supporters.

While Priest’s win wasn’t without merit, fans and analysts alike questioned the move, believing Knight had peaked and was primed for a push. To date, he still hasn’t captured a world title, and many wonder if that missed moment derailed his most significant opportunity.

In 2025, Knight qualified for his third straight Money in the Bank match. Will the third time be the charm?
