Geno Auriemma Says Jim Mora’s UConn Exit Was No “Shocker” Despite High Praise

Jim Mora Jr. finally gave UConn football the stability it desperately needed, delivering consecutive nine-win seasons and a bowl victory. So when news broke that he was leaving for Colorado State, it naturally stung the Huskies fanbase.

However, one legendary voice in Storrs saw this coming. UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma says the move makes perfect sense given the veteran coach’s background.

Why Was Geno Auriemma Unsurprised by Jim Mora Jr.’s Exit?

The 13-time national champion coach cited geography as the primary factor behind the decision. Mora is a Los Angeles native and a former Washington defensive back who has spent the vast majority of his career out West. In fact, UConn served as his only head coaching stint on the East Coast. Auriemma believes those deep regional roots made a return home inevitable.

“As far as Jim leaving, I don’t think that’s a real big shocker,” Auriemma said. “I think Jim has tremendous ties to the west, and his family is out there. So, it’s disappointing for our fan base and for us here, but understandable, I think, given the job that he did here.”

Beyond the location, the 71-year-old coaching icon praised the job Mora did revitalizing a struggling program. He noted that Mora succeeded despite the challenges of competing as an FBS Independent, where the path to the College Football Playoff relies entirely on securing an elusive at-large bid.

This situation changes immediately at his new stop. Auriemma noted that with Colorado State joining the reformed Pac-12 Conference next season, Mora gains a clearer path to the CFP that he simply didn’t have in Connecticut.

“We feel like we’re in a much better shape than we were four years ago. That’s all because of what’s happened here since Jim took the job. Football’s not only fun to watch, it’s completely different than what people were used to,” he said. “There’s a level of excitement. And he did what really good coaches do. He put his stamp on the program. He was able to recruit to the culture that he wanted here.”

How Did Mora Impact Quarterback Joe Fagnano’s Career?

Auriemma highlighted the development of Maine transfer Joe Fagnano as a prime example of Mora’s coaching legacy. The three-time Olympic gold medalist watched as Fagnano transformed from a second-string option into one of the nation’s most productive passers during the 2025 campaign.

The Hall of Fame coach was particularly impressed by the quarterback’s character and patience. Fagnano waited for his chance rather than forcing the issue, and his eventual breakout became one of the best stories in Connecticut sports this year.

Looking ahead, Auriemma expressed full confidence in University Athletic Director David Benedict. He believes the administration will find the right successor to build on the winning foundation Mora leaves behind.
