They Battle Every Single Game’ — Stephanie White Lauds Fever’s Competitive Spirit Despite 3rd Quarter Meltdown

Stephanie White focused on the team's never-say-die attitude despite their shortened squad and loss of big names.

The Indiana Fever’s season hit a crossroads Friday night. With their roster decimated by injuries and their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, they had every excuse to fold against the Minnesota Lynx. Instead, they nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback, falling just short in a 95-90 loss that revealed more about their character than their record ever could.

Stephanie White Heaps Lavish Praise on Resilient Fever Unit

The Fever, reduced to nine players due to injuries, endured a brutal third quarter with the Lynx erupting for 32 points while holding Indiana to just 17. That 15-point deficit in a single quarter could have ended the game right there, but the Fever had other plans.

What followed was a desperate final stretch as the undermanned Fever clawed their way back into contention. Despite their valiant fourth-quarter rally, they fell short by five points, dropping to 19-17 in the standings. The loss leaves them at 10-9 at home, still fighting for every victory in a compressed playoff race.

Speaking to reporters after the tough loss, head coach Stephanie White focused on the team’s never-say-die attitude despite their shortened squad and loss of big names. Her praise for the group was both heartfelt and telling about what she sees in this depleted roster.

“Our player bust their a**. They battle every single game. It’s a couple of minutes here and there; you gotta play a 40-minute game. This is a special group of women,” she said.

White emphasized how easily things could have gone wrong for her team. “What they have been going through, everything they have had to continue to overcome. To put ourselves in a position that could have been really easy to fold,” White added.

“The roots that this group is forming culturally, the roots are there in competitive spirit and what it means to compete at this level, those are what will allow us to withstand these storms. The numbers tell a story. But their hearts and their character tell another one.”

Can the Fever Survive Their Injury Crisis?

The Fever are without Caitlin Clark, Sydney Colson, Sophie Cunningham, and Aari McDonald. Barring Clark, the remaining three guards are ruled out for the season, leaving massive holes in their rotation that have forced role players into starting positions.

Despite a depleted backcourt, Indiana has managed to stay in the playoff race through sheer determination and coaching adjustments. However, they were dealt another injury blow when Odyssey Sims exited Friday’s game with an injury, potentially reducing their already thin eight-player rotation even further.

Clark is expected to return sometime before the end of the season, although there has been no official date set for her return. While the sixth-placed Fever can look to make a playoff push, they will hope their franchise player returns when the postseason begins and they need her most.

Up next, the Fever travel to Minnesota to face the Lynx again on Sunday in what amounts to a quick rematch. They later play the Los Angeles Sparks, the Golden State Valkyries, and the Phoenix Mercury — three teams also looking to secure postseason positioning.

It remains to be seen if they can pull off victories despite being reduced to an eight-member rotation, but if Friday night proved anything, it’s that this group won’t go down without a fight.
