‘She’s the GOAT’ – WNBA Fans Cheer as Brittney Griner Hands Caitlin Clark’s Fever Their First Regular-Season Loss

Caitlin Clark did all she could to take down the Atlanta Dream and Brittney Griner, but her efforts went in vain during a 91-90 loss on May 20.

Paced by Griner, the Dream put on a strong show right from the beginning. They grabbed a 31-23 lead by the end of the first quarter, then held off two rallies by the Fever and emerged as winners. Atlanta’s season record is now 1-1.

WNBA Fans Celebrate Brittney Griner’s Massive Feat

Griner remains one of the biggest names and brightest stars in WNBA history. She proved immensely valuable against Indiana as she contributed by scoring 21 points on 8-of-13 overall shooting while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out two assists.

Basketball fans couldn’t help but celebrate her massive feat on X, as she put a wrench in Clark’s plan to dominate the game.

The praise for Griner was immediate, with a few fans calling her the GOAT.

One of them wrote, “Yeah, she’s going to cook the sky bigs badly again; they never have an answer for her. Let’s see if Tyler can do something this season.”

Another fan was rather simple in their approach, stating the obvious. “She cooked”.

A fan pointed out that Atlanta and Griner are a match made in heaven. Remember, she inked a one-year deal with the Dream in the offseason after 11 years with the Phoenix Mercury. The user wrote, “she fit nicely in Atlanta!”

And then there’s yet another fan who couldn’t help but shower his love on Griner. The user wrote, “She got everything she wanted, great player”.

Griner is one of the most decorated players in the league. She’s a 10x WNBA All-Star who owns two WNBA titles and two Defensive Player of the Year awards. Meanwhile, she has led the league eight times in blocked shots.

The 34-year-old led the Mercury to a championship in only her second year in the league, averaging 15.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game, while shooting 57.8% from the field. In the previous season, she averaged 17.8 points on 57.9% shooting.

Indiana Fever Falls Short to the Atlanta Dream

The Dream started on a roll, tallying eight points to start the game and finishing the first quarter on a 13-7 run. Atlanta took a 44-42 lead into the halftime locker room.

Rhyne Howard took center stage for the Atlanta Dream in the third quarter by drilling three 3-pointers in the frame. She finished with 20 points in 36 minutes. Brionna Jones (19 points) and Allisha Gray (16 points) rounded out the box score.

Clark once again proved why she has been getting so much buzz, dropping in a game-high 27 points while knocking down five 3-pointers and dishing out 11 assists. Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell added 24 points apiece for Indiana.

In the end, it wasn’t enough as Atlanta walked away with a hard-fought 91-90 win. The Dream and Fever will battle again on May 22 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
