When Caitlin Clark entered the WNBA last season as the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever, she didn’t just bring her elite playmaking skills — she carried with her a media frenzy and fanfare that turned the spotlight onto the WNBA like never before.
Her debut was a cultural moment, helping women’s basketball finally start receiving the recognition it long deserved. But while Clark continues to energize the league on the court, it’s the New York Liberty who have now set a record-breaking precedent off the court — one that could change the future of women’s sports forever.
New York Liberty’s Record-Breaking Valuation
According to a recent report by “The Athletic” the New York Liberty has raised capital at a jaw-dropping valuation of $450 million which is the highest ever for a professional women’s sports franchise. This record-setting deal represents a historic moment not just for the WNBA but for all of women’s sports globally.
The specific number of investors involved in the funding round hasn’t been publicly disclosed, and the transaction is still waiting for formal league approval. However, the impact of the news is already sending shockwaves throughout the sports world.

Before this, the title of the most valuable women’s sports team belonged to Chelsea F.C. Women. Earlier this month, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian made headlines by purchasing an 8% stake in the club for $26.5 million, giving it a then-record valuation of $326 million.
The Liberty have now vaulted past that mark, creating a new benchmark and setting a tone for where women’s professional sports can go next.
But this isn’t just about numbers on paper. The Liberty’s leadership is already looking ahead with plans to reinvest in the franchise in a way that ensures long-term growth and success and one of the major projects on the horizon is the construction of a state-of-the-art, 75,000-square-foot practice facility in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, slated for completion in 2027.
It’s a sign that the team already a powerhouse on the court, is equally committed to dominating off it. With a roster featuring stars like Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty are proving they’re not just building a team but they’re building a legacy.
Liberty’s Dominance on the Court This Season
Fresh off a championship-winning season the Liberty entered 2025 with sky-high expectations. However their preseason start wasn’t ideal, as they stumbled in their opener against the Connecticut Sun, falling (94-86). Despite the early misstep, the Liberty quickly regained their rhythm.
In their second preseason matchup the Liberty dominated Japan’s Toyota Antelopes, cruising to an 84-61 victory. This win reignited their momentum heading into the regular season — and they delivered in a big way. In an opening night clash, the Liberty toppled the Las Vegas Aces with a convincing 92-78 win.
The Liberty continues to lean on its star duo of Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu. While Ionescu posted a solid eight points it was Stewart who shone brightest, torching the Aces with 25 points and controlling the game with her floor leadership.
Next up, the Liberty face the Chicago Sky tonight, May 22, in what’s shaping up to be another exciting test for this dominant squad.
