The Indiana Fever’s playoff run has become one of the most inspiring stories of the 2025 WNBA season. With Caitlin Clark sidelined for most of the year due to an injury, many questioned whether the Fever could stay competitive. Instead, Kelsey Mitchell has been the heart and engine of the team, not only carrying Indiana through the regular season but also sealing their postseason breakthrough. Her 24-point performance in the decisive Game 3 against the Atlanta Dream on September 18 propelled the Fever to an 87-85 win and their first trip to the semifinals in a decade.
However, Mitchell’s on-court heroics weren’t the only thing that stole the spotlight. Her emotional words about head coach Stephanie White have gone viral, adding a powerful human element to the team’s success.
Why Did Kelsey Mitchell’s Praise for Her Coach Resonate So Deeply?
After the Game 3 win, Mitchell took the podium during the postgame interview and shifted the focus from her performance to her coach. Fighting back emotions, she explained how White’s leadership has reshaped the team’s culture and her personal journey as a player.
“I’ve had five coaches in eight years. I’ve been on the worst record teams here in Indiana Fever, so I know where my career started at. I know in what position I’ve been in. And I’ve never had a coach that poured into me, respectfully, like Steph has… I’ve never really felt that as a pro, and for the first time in my career, I feel like I really have someone that values what I bring to the table as a player and a person.”
“Not just as a player, but as a person. And so I’ll always love Steph, because she gave me an opportunity to kind of be who I am. And it’s hard to do that as a professional athlete, and when you find coaches who believe in you, I’ll never take it for granted. So thank you, coach,” said Michell during the postgame interview.
Her heartfelt confession struck a deep chord not only with fans but also with White herself. White’s eyes welled up as Mitchell spoke, visibly moved by the raw honesty of her player’s gratitude.
What Makes Stephanie White’s Coaching Journey So Remarkable?
White’s career is a story of excellence. She began as an assistant with the Chicago Sky in 2007 before joining the Fever’s staff from 2011 to 2014, where she played a crucial role in Indiana’s 2012 championship run.
She later served as head coach of the Fever in 2015 and 2016. Afterward, she moved to the collegiate level to lead Vanderbilt University’s women’s basketball program from 2016 to 2021. Her return to the WNBA came with the Connecticut Sun as head coach, where she compiled a 55-25 record across two seasons and earned the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year award.
In 2025, White returned to Indiana and guided the Fever to a 24-20 record, which was good for third in the Eastern Conference and an improvement from the previous year’s 20-20 finish. Most importantly, she helped the Fever win their first playoff series since 2015, proving her immediate impact.

The decisive Game 3 was a rollercoaster. The Fever led by two after the first quarter but stumbled before halftime, entering the break down seven. Yet, fueled by White’s adjustments and Mitchell’s scoring punch, Indiana stormed back with a 38-point second half that Atlanta simply couldn’t contain.
Indiana will face the Las Vegas Aces as it prepares for the semifinals. Their coach, Becky Hammon, has already warned that the Fever haven’t seen the “real” Aces, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown. For Indiana, the combination of Mitchell’s scoring and Aliyah Boston’s inside presence will be critical.
