Paige Bueckers’ Brilliant Stint in the 2024–25 Season With the Huskies

This is Bueckers’ last dance in a UConn jersey, and she’s making it one to remember. Widely regarded as the No. 1 pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft, the 23-year-old is showing off her basketball IQ at every turn. The senior guard is averaging 20.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists while shooting 53.9% from the field and 42.4% from 3-point range.

Bueckers has already cemented her name in college basketball history. As a freshman, she swept the sport’s biggest individual honors — winning the Naismith Trophy, AP Player of the Year, and the John R. Wooden Award. She made history as the first freshman to claim all three in a single season.

“Don’t want to take it for granted,” said Bueckers about the championship.

Legendary coach Geno Auriemma has once again molded a young and battle-tested group into title contenders. Despite injuries early in the season, UConn found its rhythm thanks to a balanced offense and elite defense. Alongside Bueckers, Sarah Strong (16.2 points per game) and sharpshooter Azzi Fudd (13.3) have played key roles.

But standing in their way is a juggernaut. South Carolina has lost only three games this season. Led by coach Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks play suffocating defense and dominate the paint with size and athleticism. Joyce Edwards (12.7 ppg) and MiLaysia Fulwiley (11.8) are two players who will give the Huskies a tough fight.

If South Carolina pulls off the win Sunday, Staley would become the first coach since Auriemma to lead a team to back-to-back national titles. Meanwhile, a victory for Auriemma and the Huskies would mark the program’s 12th national championship, adding yet another chapter to UConn’s storied legacy.
