Sonia Citron walked into a South Bend restaurant expecting a quiet dinner with friends. Instead, she found herself in an awkward case of mistaken identity that perfectly captures the buzz surrounding the Washington Mystics rookie. The mix-up involved another WNBA star, and Citron’s reaction reveals just how surreal her breakout season has become.
What Makes Citron’s Case of Mistaken Identity So Telling?
The Mystics have outperformed expectations in the 2024-25 season. What was assumed to be a quiet rebuilding year has turned into a thrilling campaign, with fans believing a playoff spot is within reach.
Washington currently sits seventh in the league, and the engine behind these strong performances has been Sonia Citron. The rookie has delivered solid scoring displays throughout the season and ranks second in points among rookies, trailing only Paige Bueckers.
After Citron earned what appears to be the first of many All-Star appearances this past weekend in Indianapolis, comparisons to fellow All-Star Caitlin Clark came as no surprise. However, the criteria wasn’t their basketball skill, as Citron revealed an incident she described as “weird.”
Citron recently appeared on the Monumental Sports Network, where she sat down for “8 Questions” with host Tyler Byrum. When Byrum asked the Mystics guard about the weirdest place she has been recognized, she admitted that no particularly strange location came to mind. Instead, she shared the story of being mistaken for Clark.
“I would say something weird happened when I got recognized because it wasn’t me. Like, I think you will understand when I explain,” said Citron. “I was at a restaurant with my two friends from Notre Dame in South Bend and this guy came up to me and was like super excited, and was like, oh my goodness, are you Caitlin Clark? [He] like asked me if I could get a signature, a picture and I was like, it’s just not, it’s not me.”

How Deep Does the Clark-Citron Connection Run?
While on-court comparisons to Clark are expected to be part of Citron’s bright future, for now, it’s their remarkably similar looks that grab attention. Citron’s restaurant story has further fueled the conversation as fans continue to express surprise at the resemblance.
The connection between the two goes beyond physical appearance. Clark selected Citron during the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game draft and spoke highly of the rookie, highlighting the mutual respect they share.
“Big fan of her game. Been a big fan of her since she’s been in college. Um, and I’ve been telling everybody I thought she would be a tremendous player when she got into the league, and she hasn’t let me down. So, I appreciate that. So, I’m taking her on my team. Great addition for us. I’m excited.”

This wasn’t the first time Citron and Clark shared the court as teammates. The All-Star guards both represented the USA at the FIBA Under-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Hungary four years ago, where they won a gold medal.
Both players even earned spots in the tournament’s All-Star Five. As Citron looked to walk away awkwardly after receiving the award, Clark stepped in like an older sister, pulling the Notre Dame alum back into the frame for a picture. While the moment might seem small, it represents one of many instances of mutual respect between them.
For Citron, the focus will now shift back to the season as Washington hopes the firepower of their youth can make their playoff push a reality.
