Will the Cowboys Sign Shaq Leonard? Surprise Free Agent “Taking the Weekend”

Former Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard was released this past week, and now he's looking for a new home. Could the Cowboys be where he's going?

The Dallas Cowboys have been one of not only the NFC’s best but also the NFL’s. Sitting at 8-3 on the season, they are fighting for the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles.

One of the biggest reasons for their success has been their stifling defense, which ranks third in the NFL. There has been an issue, though, and it’s linebacker.

Former Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard was released this past week, and now he’s looking for a new home. Could the Cowboys be where he’s going after taking a visit there?

Will Dallas Ink Shaq Leonard?

Going into the season, Leighton Vander Esch was the starting linebacker and leader of the Cowboys’ defense. However, he went down with an injury in Dallas’ Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Vander Esch was later deemed to have a neck injury. This is the third neck injury of his career, with the first coming back in 2016 during his time at Boise State. Just in recent weeks, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed that his season was over and his career could be in jeopardy.

With the injury, it left a hole in the middle of the Cowboys’ defense. Second-year player Damone Clark took over in his place. However, recently released Shaquille Leonard has been on their radar.

Leonard was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He spent six seasons with Indianapolis, where he was a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. He led the league in tackles his rookie season.

In 2023, Leonard has had limited action in just nine games. He has struggled with injuries in recent years, and with the emergence of Zaire Franklin, he hasn’t been a part of Indianapolis’ plans. The two parties decided to part ways on November 22.

It was confirmed by Jones that the team was interested in Leonard and they would be having lunch on Tuesday, November 28. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy also told reporters that there is “definitely” interest.

Leonard also visited with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. It is reported that he will be deciding between those two teams this weekend.

The Eagles are also in need at the position, as they are down Nakobe Dean and potentially Zach Cunningham as well. Christian Elliss and Nicholas Morrow would be the starting linebackers if that were to stay the case.

The two rival teams have already faced off once this season, with the Eagles prevailing 28-23 in Week 9. The two will play again in Week 14 on Sunday Night Football, with Philadelphia going to Dallas this time.
