Will Caleb Williams Throw at the 2024 NFL Combine?

Former USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has the arm talent to light up the 2024 NFL Combine, but will the QB be throwing in Indianapolis?

The 2024 NFL Combine is the next stop on the journey toward the NFL Draft, as coaches, scouts, and fans look to get eyes on the next generation of NFL superstars.

No position has more intrigue than the quarterbacks, and Caleb Williams is considered by many to be the best of the bunch. However, with several top quarterbacks opting not to throw in recent seasons, will Williams take to the field for the 2024 NFL Combine?

Is Caleb Williams Participating in Drills at the 2024 NFL Combine?

In recent weeks, Williams has emerged as the heavy favorite to be selected first overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft. The selection, however, would come with some controversy, as current Bears QB Justin Fields would likely need to be moved.

Williams’ incredible creation capacity and arm strength would be on full display at the 2024 NFL Combine. However, he has opted not to throw in Indianapolis.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Williams has decided not to participate in on-field activities and only conduct interviews and meetings with NFL teams during the week-long event.

“Caleb Williams will wait until his Pro Day to throw and workout for scouts, sources say,” Rapoport said. He continued, “[Williams will] be in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, but not throw for teams.”

As the presumed top pick, Williams has little to gain by throwing at the 2024 NFL Combine. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner has already proven his natural athleticism and arm talent on the field in college.

As a sophomore in 2022, Williams was the best player in college football and looked destined to be the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While winning the Heisman, the former USC QB threw for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also rushed for 382 more yards and 10 more touchdowns.

While 2023 was considered a down year for the playmaking QB, he still managed to rack up 3,633 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Williams also rushed for 142 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior year.

Even though it will disappoint fans, Williams has nothing more to gain by throwing at the 2024 NFL Combine. Opting not to throw isn’t a concern for NFL teams and won’t diminish his chances of being selected as the first pick.

In 2023, Bryce Young opted not to throw at the NFL Combine and was selected first overall to the Carolina Panthers –- and he was a historical outlier at the position.

The real gain for the former USC quarterback is meeting teams as they attempt to better understand his mental intangibles.
