With an entire season under his belt, Jordan Love looks to build upon a career year in 2024, especially after inking an extension that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback.
While the Lions are still the presumed favorites in the NFC North, the Packers are also a contender for the division title. However, not only does Love get an extra year of experience, but the Packers also return a receiving core that had an entire season with Love to establish chemistry.
Green Bay did suffer an offseason loss as seven-year RB Aaron Jones signed with the division-rival Minnesota Vikings in free agency. With a void to fill, the Packers made a notable free agent signing in former Las Vegas Raider Josh Jacobs, who is the team’s new RB1.
That won’t be the only change to the rushing attack, as Green Bay placed AJ Dillon on IR with a neck injury last week. This move could result in 2024 third-round RB MarShawn Lloyd receiving a lot more snaps than he was expecting during his rookie campaign, as well as a chance to steal Dillon’s RB2 spot. Dillon becomes a free agent at the end of this season.
As for Philadelphia, a Week 1 win could not be more crucial after the way the Eagles’ 2023 season crashed and burned.
After a 10-1 start, the Eagles lost five of their last regular-season games, let the Cowboys steal the NFC East title from them, and then lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the Wild Card round.
The coaching improvements should help head coach Nick Sirianni, but the most important goal for this season and his future is repairing the relationship with QB Jalen Hurts.
At many points last season, the Eagles’ offense looked disjointed and not on the same page despite being loaded with talent at every position. If Kellen Moore can help bridge the gap between Hurts and Sirianni, Philadelphia could be looking at another trip to the Super Bowl.
Key Stats Around the Packers and Eagles
Green Bay Packers
- The Packers shuffled up their kicker situation after five missed PATs last season (their 87.2% conversion rate on extra points was third worst in the league).
- In terms of Passer Rating, Jordan Love was the second-best QB in the NFL when playing with a leaf last season (first: Brock Purdy, third: Dak Prescott).
- Offense: The Packers converted 19 of 20 goal-to-go drives into touchdowns last season.
- Defense: The Packers were third-best last season at generating pressure without blitzing (38.6%, NFL average: 33.3%).
Philadelphia Eagles
- Over the past two seasons, the Eagles are 20-2 through their first 11 games, easily the best mark in the NFL (KC is second at 17-5) … from game 12 on in those seasons, they are 5-7 (the Giants are 5-6-1 in such games over that stretch).
- The majority of Jalen Hurts’ career rushing TDs (22 of 41) have come from the 1-yard line. Over the past 3 seasons, he has more 1-yard TD runs than Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey, and Aaron Jones combined.
- Offense: The Eagles were the run-heaviest red zone team in 2023 (63.8%, no other team was above 59.7%, and the league average was 51.2%).
