What Happened to Tua Tagovailoa? Dolphins QB Gets Well-Deserved Rest After Dominating Commanders

Tua Tagovailoa continued his strong season with a dominant performance against the Commanders before exiting late for a well-deserved break.

Tua Tagovailoa continued his strong season with a dominant day Sunday in leading the Miami Dolphins to a sizable lead over the Washington Commanders before exiting in the fourth quarter of the blowout win.

Tagovailoa was dialed in from the start on Sunday to help Miami amass a 31-7 lead by halftime.

After the Dolphins forced Washington to punt on its opening drive, Tagovailoa quickly connected with Tyreek Hill for a 78-yard touchdown pass on just their third play from scrimmage. Hill broke away on a go-route, and Tagovailoa lofted the ball to him before he easily won a footrace to the end zone.

That score extended Tagovailoa’s streak of games with a passing touchdown to now 21 straight appearances. The fourth-year quarterback last failed to throw for a score in Miami’s 27-15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 of the 2022 season, a game he exited early with an injury.

Tagovailoa was not done after his first score on Sunday, however. He again connected with Hill with 9:14 left in the second quarter, this time for a 60-yard TD pass that extended Miami’s lead to 24-7 after the Commanders had scored their first touchdown.

Tagovailoa finished the day 18 of 24 for 280 yards and two touchdowns.

It marked just the latest big day for Tagovailoa as he continues to have a career year. He entered Sunday’s game having completed 69.8% of his pass attempts for 3,177 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

The commanding win helped the Dolphins (9-3) return to a tie for the AFC lead with the Baltimore Ravens (9-3), who take their bye this week. The Kansas City Chiefs (8-3) and Jacksonville Jaguars (8-3) could still join the pack before the week’s end, however, with wins on Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football, respectively.

Who Is Mike White?

When Tagovailoa exited, Miami turned to Mike White, their typical backup QB.

The veteran NFL quarterback made his fourth appearance of the season Sunday, with each of the previous three being brief, mostly uneventful stints late in comfortable wins for Miami.

He first appeared in the Dolphins’ 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos, completing both of his two pass attempts for 67 yards and one touchdown, a 68-yard grab by Robbie Chosen early in the fourth quarter of the contest.

He has since gone 0 of 1 for no yards, and one interception in brief appearances during comfortable wins over the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets.

White has appeared in just 11 games since being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. His professional debut came in 2021 for the New York Jets before he made three starts that year, then made four more starts the next year as the franchise dealt with turnover at quarterback.
