New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers

      8:15 p.m. ET

      Prime Video

2023 has been a season to forget so far for the Giants. The Dallas Cowboys shellacked the G-Men 40-0 in Week 1, and things seemed to be trending in the same direction in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.

While the 21-point comeback win was impressive, being down 28-7 to this iteration of Arizona is not a good sign. Unfortunately, the outlook on Week 3 looks bleak for New York, given how tough the matchup seems.

San Francisco should be able to exploit many of the Giants’ weaknesses, especially when the 49ers’ offense is on the field. First and foremost, the 49ers have turned the ball over just 19 times since the start of the 2022 season, tied for the fewest in the NFL.

New York has only forced 18 turnovers in that same period, tied for the third-fewest. Additionally, the 49ers went 12-0 when not throwing an interception, while the Giants intercepted just six passes in the same span, tied for the least in the league.

Furthermore, the 49ers have averaged 114.7 yards per game since the start of last season and are 12-1 when rushing for 120+ yards. New York allows an average of 144.1 rushing yards per game, the fourth-highest in the NFL.

San Francisco has also rushed for 10+ yards on 13% of 439 carries, while the Giants have allowed 15.1% of RB carries to go 10+ yards. The Giants’ rebuild under second-year head coach Brian Daboll was well ahead of schedule with a playoff appearance in 2022.

While the offense looked somewhat akin to the Giants’ success last season, the slow start is problematic. However, the defensive struggles are paramount. Given the difficult matchup, Giants fans shouldn’t expect a massive change this week.
