Week 7 on the college football schedule offers several interesting matchups. From a national perspective, the afternoon kickoff between Kentucky and Georgia has the most at stake. Yet, there are several head-to-head matchups between top NFL Draft prospects elsewhere on the slate.
College Football Week 7: UCF vs. Cincinnati
During this week’s edition of Between the Hashes podcast, I spoke about two of the Cincinnati Bearcats’ underclassmen leaning towards the draft. While Cincinnati has several players likely headed to the NFL, their opponent — UCF — also has an underclassman close to making the leap to the next level.
UCF junior receiver Jaylon Robinson graded as a third-round prospect on my board and is a prospect I’ve spoken about since the summer. He’s an explosive deep threat that shows a lot of run-after-catch ability. I’ve reported that Robinson is roughly 80% committed to entering the 2022 NFL Draft. Today’s game against the Bearcats will be his toughest test of the season.
Cincinnati has two excellent cornerbacks considering the move to Sundays. I’m told Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner is signed, sealed, and delivered for the 2022 NFL Draft. Underrated Coby Bryant — a Week 5 riser — should end up in the late rounds. The Bearcats also come equipped with a pair of outstanding safeties in Bryan Cook and Ja’von Hicks.
The Bearcats’ defense has been dominant at all levels, but their secondary has the most talent. Robinson has his work cut out for him today.
Other prospects to watch in Week 7
Who are some of the future NFLers to tune in for today?
Kentucky vs. Georgia
On Between the Hashes, Cam Mellor and I highlighted some of the biggest matchups to watch in Kentucky and Georgia’s contest. To no one’s surprise, the top battles can be found on the line of scrimmage — specifically when Kentucky’s offense squares off with Georgia’s awesome front four.
One prospect to keep an eye on in this game is Wildcats safety Yusuf Corker. He’s an underrated prospect who chose to return to Kentucky for a second senior season and is having a really good campaign.
Fresno State vs. Wyoming
Staying on the theme of underrated, there’s a significant battle taking place in the Mountain West as Fresno State travels to Wyoming. Both teams have winning records, but both lost games inside the conference last week. The loser of this game is likely out of the running for their division of the Mountain West.
We’ve spoken about Fresno State’s explosive offense multiple times this season on Between the Hashes. Quarterback Jake Haener is averaging just under 400 yards passing per game and already has 16 TDs this season. Scatback Ronnie Rivers is averaging 4.2 yards on 91 carries.
Wyoming, meanwhile, features linebacker Chad Muma on defense. Although he’s tough and gritty with excellent size, Muma’s lack of speed has raised red flags in college football scouting circles. His ability to stop Rivers (who does most of his damage running in space) or play well in coverage today could quell some of those concerns.
