USFL schedule Week 5: TV channels, odds, picks, and predictions

Another week means another set of games set to kick off. Let's take a closer look at the Week 5 games on the USFL's schedule.

The USFL season rolls on to Week 5 of the regular season. The Birmingham Stallions remain undefeated and still hold onto the league’s first overall seed. Week 4 wrapped up the USFL’s first stint of intradivisional play, and there’s a distinct order established in the standings. Let’s look at the league’s first week of interdivisional matchups since the season’s debut on the USFL’s Week 5 schedule.

USFL Week 5 schedule: TV channel, odds, and picks

The Stallions finished their first sweep against its South Division counterparts. Now, they get to face the North’s second-best team in Week 5. Will the Stallions continue their roll, or will the Philadelphia Stars finally take down the USFL’s top dog?

Meanwhile, all eyes outside Birmingham will be on Saturday’s showdown between the New Orleans Breakers and New Jersey Generals. Both teams enter this matchup at 3-1 on the season, with both losses coming at the hands of the Stallions. The Generals fell in Week 1 and swept their North Division competition. Can they notch their first win against a South Division opponent?

While the tops of each division go head-to-head in Week 5, the basement dwellers have a chance to make up some ground. The winless Maulers take on the Houston Gamblers. Can Pittsburgh head coach Kirby Wilson and Co. take advantage of an inconsistent Clayton Thorson and finally notch their first win? With some alluring Week 5 matchups, let’s dive deeper into the USFL’s schedule this week.

The first USFL game on the schedule sees the Michigan Panthers squaring off against the Tampa Bay Bandits. The Bandits lost a close one in Week 4 in their attempt to dethrone the Stallions. After an impressive offensive performance in Week 3, LB Scooby Wright III and Co. were too much for QB Jordan Ta’amu. Meanwhile, the Panthers were a chip shot away from being in second place in the North Division.

Michigan relies heavily on the rushing attack to create offensive consistency. That will be a problem for head coach Jeff Fisher against a ferocious Bandits defense. Tampa Bay held the Stallions’ lead back in check, and if they can shut down the Panthers’ rushing attack, it’s game, set, and match for the Bandits. The Bandits can throw the football with better consistency — take the two points and breathe.

Prediction: Bandits 24, Panthers 13

New Orleans Breakers (3-1) vs. New Jersey Generals (3-1)

  • Start time: 3 p.m. ET, May 14
  • Channel: FOX
  • Live stream options: Fubo TV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV
  • USFL Odds: (Odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook)
    • Spread: Breakers -3
    • Moneyline: Breakers -150, Generals +130
    • Over/Under: 36.5

Week 5’s game of the week sees the New Orleans Breakers and New Jersey Generals go head-to-head on the USFL’s schedule. Both teams currently possess a playoff spot in their respective divisions but sit in two different situations. The Breakers are second in the South, with the Bandits right on their heels. Luckily for New Orleans, the Breakers beat the Bandits in Week 2. However, they are actively trying to keep pace with Birmingham. A slip-up makes it much harder to catch the league’s only undefeated team.

The Generals, meanwhile, won’t face nearly as many consequences from a loss. The loss wouldn’t budge them from their one-game-lead perch as the first seed in the North. The sweep of the North means New Jersey holds tiebreakers over every divisional opponent. The Breakers are the more complete team in this matchup, giving Mike Riley’s two-QB system its toughest test of the season. After getting some errant throws out, Breakers QB Kyle Sloter will have a much better performance this week.

Prediction: Breakers 30, Generals 21

Birmingham Stallions (4-0) vs. Philadelphia Stars (2-2)

  • Start time: Noon ET, May 15
  • Channel: NBC
  • Live stream options: Peacock
  • USFL Odds: (Odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook)
    • Spread: Stallions -6
    • Moneyline: Stallions -250, Stars +200
    • Over/Under: 36

The third game of the USFL’s Week 5 schedule has the Birmingham Stallions playing against the Philadelphia Stars. The Stars are counting down the weeks until QB Bryan Scott returns to the team, but in the meantime, Case Cookus has filled in nicely. The stakes ratchet up a notch with the USFL’s top seed on the docket.

Birmingham’s defense has slowly improved throughout the season, with their best performance coming against the Bandits in Week 4. The return of QB Alex McGough did not have the offense churning as it did under J’Mar Smith, but the Stallions won nonetheless.

The Stallions have done enough to eke out wins all season. Can they take advantage of a weak defense, or will they continue to play to their competition? Should Skip Holtz keep McGough in, this could be a good week for the quarterback to establish some chemistry with his receivers. The Stallions grab another narrow victory, but the Stars need Scott back as soon as possible.

Prediction: Stallions 27, Stars 23

Pittsburgh Maulers (0-4) vs. Houston Gamblers (1-3)

  • Start time: 4 p.m. ET, May 15
  • Channel: FOX
  • Live stream options: Fubo TV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV
  • USFL Odds: (Odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook)
    • Spread: Gamblers -5.5
    • Moneyline: Gamblers -235, Maulers +190
    • Over/Under: 34

The final game of the USFL schedule features the bottom teams in the North and South Divisions. The Pittsburgh Maulers stumble into Week 5 without a win, and the journey has been rough. Their counterpart could be having a completely different conversation if they could play a full 60 minutes of football. The Gamblers currently sit at 1-3 on the season, but all three of their divisional losses have been by one possession. Their 27-26 Week 3 loss to the Bandits was harrowing after losing on a last-minute field goal.

The Gamblers have one of the most relentless defenses in the USFL, leading the league with 11 takeaways and a +6 turnover differential. Conversely, the passing game is limping. QB Thorson averages 145.3 yards per game and has become a thorn in the side of the Gamblers’ offense. After being shut down by New Orleans, Houston will need RB Mark Thompson to return to his league-leading form. The Gamblers get back on track after a three-game losing streak.

Prediction: Gamblers 27, Maulers 15
