In a five-round clash, welterweight contenders Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates headlined the UFC Fight Night Kansas City card. The event was held on April 26 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Garry entered the fight after his first professional MMA loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 in December 2024. On the other hand, Prates was on an 11-fight win streak before the encounter on April 26.

Round 1
The fight started slowly as both fighters cautiously approached each other. Prates connected with a left hand on Garry. “The Future” responded moments later with a left hand of his own.
Garry attempted a takedown, but the Brazilian stuffed it. The 27-year-old kept kicking Prates’ legs throughout the round. In the closing seconds of the round, Prates lost balance and dropped to the ground. Garry proceeded to land some ground-and-pound strikes from the top position.
Round 2
Garry landed a kick on Prates’ body. “The Future” attempted a single-leg takedown but failed again. Prates had the Irishman in a clinch position against the cage, but Garry got out of it.
Garry connected with multiple good punches on the Brazilian. His third takedown attempt was also unsuccessful. “The Future” threw a heavy head kick and followed it up with punches to Prates’ head.

Round 3
Both individuals threw kicks at each other’s bodies and heads. The 31-year-old also stuffed Garry’s fourth takedown attempt. “The Future” landed a brutal uppercut that seemingly affected Prates. The Irishman finally succeeded in scoring a takedown and got into top position.
Moments later, the two welterweights got back on their feet and started trading punches again. Garry proceeded to land his second successful takedown.
Round 4
Garry continued to outclass Prates in the striking department, attacking the Brazilian’s body and legs with kicks. Garry proceeded to score multiple takedowns, but eventually, Prates managed to get back up on his feet.
“The Future” continued to land heavy blows on his opponent. Prates then landed a combo of punches on Garry.
Round 5
Prates showed an aggressive approach in the last round and landed good shots. Garry made multiple attempts to take the fight to the ground. However, he failed. A right hand from the Irishman stumbled Prates, but the Brazilian recovered quickly.
Garry went for a takedown, but Prates reversed it and got into top position.

Prates went on to land some brutal shots on Garry. The Irishman managed to survive the round.

The fight went the 25-minute distance and ended with a unanimous decision victory for Garry. The three judges scored the contest 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 in favor of “The Future.”

In his post-fight Octagon interview, Garry claimed to be the official back-up fighter for the upcoming title fight between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315.
