Islam Makhachev’s Coach Reveals What Changed His Mind About Paddy Pimblett and Why He Deserves a Title Shot

Javier Mendez, head coach of reigning UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, has revealed that his opinion of Paddy Pimblett has undergone a major shift — thanks to Pimblett’s recent performances inside the Octagon. Known for his straight-shooting assessments, Mendez didn’t hold back in applauding “The Baddy” for evolving into a legitimate contender in the division.

Impressed not just by Pimblett’s fighting skills but also by his ability to command a massive following, Mendez openly declared himself a fan.

What Changed Javier Mendez’s Mind About Paddy Pimblett?

Pimblett’s defining moment came at UFC 314, where he dismantled Michael Chandler in a dominant performance that silenced doubters and elevated his stock.

From the opening bell, Pimblett set the tone, out-striking and out-grappling Chandler with authority. His composure and calculated aggression culminated in a third-round TKO.

The Liverpudlian didn’t just win; he made a statement. He improved to 7-0 in the UFC and (23 wins overall), secured a POTN bonus, and climbed to the eighth spot in the lightweight division.

Mendez said: “You know, I wasn’t a big fan at the beginning. I was not [but] when he fought Jared Gordon [at UFC 282] … I became a huge fan.”

“He’s very interesting, and he’s got the whole England behind him. A lot of America is going to be behind them, and most of America will be. He has a lot of fans, and I’m a fan,” Mendez shared on the “Javier & Mo Show” podcast

Mendez Deems Pimblett a Worthy Title Challenger

With a winning streak, high-profile victories, and a massive fanbase, Pimblett has undeniably become one of the UFC’s biggest attractions. But does he deserve a shot at the title? According to Mendez, the answer is yes.
Appearing in the aforementioned podcast, the coach said:

“Paddy is ready to face anybody. What he has done already, his credentials, his winning record in the UFC, his hype and what he can do, how he can motivate people. If they give him the title shot, he deserves it because they gave it to him. Who gets into the arena with him next? I don’t know. But is he worthy? Yes.”

While the UFC hasn’t announced what’s next for Pimblett, Mendez’s endorsement adds serious weight to the title conversation.
