Dustin Poirier, the former interim UFC lightweight champion, often tries to finish fights with guillotine chokes. Although he is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Tim Credeur, Poirier has not finished a fight in his MMA career with a guillotine choke.
Poirier last fought at UFC 302, where he lost to Islam Makhachev in a lightweight title fight. “The Diamond” is looking for one more fight inside the Octagon before calling it quits.
Kayla Harrison Reacts to Dustin Poirier Choking Out MMA Reporter
Poirier recently taught a modified version of the guillotine choke to Mike Bohn, a journalist working for MMAJunkie. Poirier used the technique on Bohn, who went unconscious within seconds.
The MMA website shared the clip on its official Instagram handle, catching the attention of Kayla Harrison, who is scheduled to fight Julianna Pena for the women’s bantamweight title at UFC 316 on June 7 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

“No one is safe,” Harrison wrote in the comments section of the post.

It was Grant Dawson, a lightweight contender and Poirier’s teammate at American Top Team, who had taught him the modified version.
Neither Dawson nor Poirier has yet successfully used the technique inside the octagon. Funnily enough, Chris Duncan, who learned the technique from Poirier, used it to defeat Jordan Vucenic at UFC London.
Kayla Harrison Once Hailed Dustin Poirier’s Mentality
After Poirier defeated Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299, Harrison appeared on “Rise Above with Kevin Lanning,” a mental health podcast. Poirier had defeated Saint-Denis by knockout, but what impressed Harrison was his interview with Ariel Helwani shortly after the fight.
“To me, like yes, Dustin’s performance is amazing, and like that’s why people love him. But for me, why I love him even more is what he did, whatever, Monday after the fight, when he was like, no dude, like I wasn’t okay. I was in a really bad place after I lost. Like I was questioning who I am,” Harrison said.
The UFC bantamweight felt that Poirier certainly had influenced many by opening up about his vulnerability. The 34-year-old admitted that Poirier’s act earned respect, and he will always be a winner in her eyes.
At the time, Harrison had not yet made her UFC debut. She announced her arrival in stunning fashion shortly after, at UFC 300, where she submitted Holly Holm, a former bantamweight champion.
Meanwhile, the victory at UFC 299 helped Poirier secure a lightweight title shot against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Unfortunately, he lost via submission in the fifth round. Incidentally, Poirier had lost his last two undisputed title fights, against Charles Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov, via submission.
