Joe Rogan’s recent podcast conversation, which included references to the fictional character Dr. Hannibal Lecter, took a wild turn. It witnessed him offer his diet advice to those who adhere to a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Joe Rogan’s Hannibal Lecter Conversation Turned Into Diet Advice for Vegetarians and Vegans
On episode #2315 of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast this month (May 2025), Joe Rogan hosted Jose Andres — a Spanish-American restaurateur, chef, author, and public personality. The duo discussed various topics, including food and dietary habits.
Around the 2:02:40-minute mark of the episode, Andres suggested that since vegetarian animals generally eat grass and have a vegetarian diet, humans who eat those vegetarian animals are technically vegetarians.
Andres subsequently recalled that he helped the makers of the American television series “Hannibal” — advising them about the culinary elements in the script. He stated, “You know I helped scriptwriters and the director of a series on NBC, called ‘Hannibal,’ many years ago? Hannibal Lecter, when he was young. I was helping them with the menus, the food, the scripts, the crazy conversations.”
Chiming in, Rogan questioned whether Lecter was a chef, in response to which, Andres seemingly reaffirmed that he advised the series’ makers on the culinary aspect of the scriptwriting for the character’s younger years.
Rogan disagreed with Andres’ suggestion that people who eat vegetarian animals should be categorized as vegetarians. The UFC commentator asserted, “He [Hannibal Lecter] ate people, too. That kind of goes with my argument — I don’t think vegans are going to agree with you. That’s all I’m saying.”
Andres weighed in by highlighting that he had a vegetarian cookbook, adding that he loves vegetables. Their conversation then took another wild turn, which saw Rogan offer diet advice to vegetarians and vegans by claiming that they ought to consume eggs. For context, the consensus is that vegans usually refrain from consuming any product originating from animals, including eggs.
Nevertheless, Rogan said, “Well, vegetarians should really eat eggs. You know, I mean, vegans should eat eggs, too, especially if you have your own chickens. It’s like karma-free food.”
Over the years, Rogan has often pointed out that he’s consumed a wide variety of non-vegetarian food, which also entails eating the animals he hunts. As mentioned in one of his Instagram posts a few months ago, the martial arts aficionado affirmed that he was consuming elk meat. An excerpt from the American podcaster’s post read, “Wild game is the best food on earth.”
