Several younger siblings have followed in their elder counterparts’ footsteps into sports. MMA isn’t an exception to this phenomenon. Fighter sibling duos like the Diaz brothers have made their mark in the MMA fanbase with their signature style.
However, does the seasoned UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns also have a brother who fights in the UFC? Let’s find out the answer to this question here.
Gilbert Burns’ Brother Is an MMA Fighter, but Has He Fought for the UFC?
Nick and Nate Diaz are by far the most famous fighting sibling duo, but there are several others in the current UFC roster despite being relatively unknown to fans. The former featherweight champ, Ilia Topuria’s brother, Aleksandre Topuria, fights in the bantamweight division, while the popular light heavyweight, Johnny Walker’s younger sibling, Valter Walker, is a heavyweight contender.
Burns also has a brother who followed in his footsteps to join pro-MMA. ‘Durinho’s’ brother, Herbert Burns, made his pro-MMA debut in Feb. 2012, just a month after Gilbert’s debut. Herbert made his way into ONE Championship with a victory in it, while Gilbert kept changing promotions with each of his fights.
However, ‘Durinho’ made it to the premier MMA promotion in the world before his younger brother. Gilbert signed with the UFC in 2014, when Herbert was in the initial phase of his tenure with ONE Championship.
Herbert joined Titan FC for a couple of encounters following his seven-fight career at ONE Championship. He took his first step towards entering the UFC when he competed as a featherweight in the 2019 edition of Dana White’s Contender Series. Herbert became successful in bagging a UFC contract on his first try with a first-round submission victory over his DWCS rival, Darrick Minner.
‘The Blaze’ had a flying start in his UFC career with consecutive victories in the first three fights. However, his victory train got derailed as he endured a defeat against Daniel Pineda in his fourth fight at UFC 252.
Herbert never looked the same inside the octagon after his first defeat. He endured defeats in all three of his following UFC encounters, with the last one happening at UFC 305 in Aug. 2024. Dana White and Co. decided to cut him from the roster following his four-fight losing streak.
There’s no information available about whether or not Herbert will ever make his way back into the MMA cage. So, it would be accurate to say that Gilbert has a brother who once competed in the UFC.
