Carlos Prates, undefeated in the UFC, is set to headline the upcoming UFC Kansas City fight night against Ian Garry. Currently on a five-fight winning streak, Prates is part of the acclaimed Fighting Nerds team from Brazil.
More than his exciting fighting style, Prates’ health habits have also been a topic of much debate. Let’s take a closer look at it.
What Did Carlos Prates Say About Smoking Cigarettes?
Many in combat sports consider smoking cigarettes a taboo, but not Carlos Prates. “The Nightmare” has been public about the habit, and it came to greater attention after news spread that he was smoking while he received the news that he got a Performance of the Night bonus for knocking out Charles Radtke with a knee at UFC Louisville.
In his interview with Full Send MMA after the fight, Prates discussed the habit, which went viral on social media.
“I go to party or smoke, I smoke cigarettes and drink, but a lot, a lot of course it’s not good. But I know how to find a way and things might get done. You know, when I come to train, I’m the first guy to come to the gym and the last one to leave the gym,” Prates said.
The 31-year-old admitted that many are against athletes smoking cigarettes. However, he shared that his coach and father don’t mind too much about.
When Did Carlos Prates Start Smoking Cigarettes?
In Brazil, the legal age to purchase and consume tobacco products is 18. However, Carlos Prates began to smoke years before he was legally allowed to do so. He shared it in the above interview.
“I smoke since my 15 years old. I have more time living smoking than without smoking, so for me it’s normal. I smoke before the fight, on the day of the fight,” Prates said.
Funnily enough, the Welterweight contender had plans other than smoking after victory at UFC Louisville. The 31-year-old stated that he will drink some whiskey as part of his post-fight victory celebration.
How Many Cigarettes Does Carlos Prates Smoke a Day?
In his last fight, Carlos Prates defeated Neil Magny in the first round of the UFC Vegas 100 main event. With the victory, Prates extended his finishing streak in the promotion to five. He also won his fourth straight Performance of the Night bonus.
Shortly after the victory, the 31-year-old appeared on the Ariel Helwani Show, where the veteran journalist asked how many cigarettes he smoked each day. “Maybe eight per day, 10, seven,” Prates replied.
“The Nightmare” admitted that his coaches had tried to stop him, but to no avail. Funnily enough, he once tried to quit, but it affected him negatively.
“I tried to stop one time and then I was one week without smoke, and then I got five kilos in six days. No, because I eat a lot and didn’t come to the gym to train, and yeah, I got five kilos,” Prates said.
When asked whether he likes to smoke marijuana, Prates replied that he wasn’t much interested in it.
