Several netizens, including Jones himself, took to the aforementioned post’s comments section. The BJJ star wrote, “Time to retire.” Another comment put forth by him read, “I wish this was a joke. I’m the joke.”
Nevertheless, many netizens suggested that Jones was pretending to have been choked unconscious. Some even implied that he intentionally let Della Maddalena submit him and render him unconscious. Fellow martial artist Ariel Meru Sexton appeared to jestingly suggest that Jones deserved an Oscar for acting as though he’d been choked unconscious, “and the Oscar goes to…”
One fan wrote, “The amount of people who believe this is insane. I love this clips,” whereas another stated, “Bro literally let him.” A commenter lauded the grappling sequence and noted, “Great take down to darce sub. But yeah does seem like Craig let him to drill it”
On the contrary, some observers indicated that Jones was simply helping present Della Maddalena as a genuine grappling threat ahead of his fight against UFC Welterweight Champion Belal Muhammad. A fan opined, “Fake news to scare Belal.” Another fan asserted, “A charity sub to scare Belal is crazy.”
Della Maddalena is regarded by many as one of the most skilled and dangerous strikers in the UFC welterweight division. After losing the first two bouts of his professional MMA career, “JDM” has amassed a 17-fight win streak and is undefeated under the UFC promotional banner.
Presently, Della Maddalena is scheduled to take on Belal Muhammad for the latter’s UFC welterweight championship. Their fight will headline the UFC 315 pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 10, 2025.
