Bruno Surace vs Jaime Munguia 2: Results, Highlights, and Full Recap

Jaime Munguia put in a disciplined and relentless performance to avenge his lone knockout loss, defeating Bruno Surace by unanimous decision in their highly anticipated rematch on the Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull undercard in Riyadh.

After being stunned by Surace in their first meeting, Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) entered the ring with something to prove. On Saturday, he applied constant pressure over twelve rounds, staying smart defensively and working Surace’s body with punishing efficiency.

Bruno Surace vs. Jaime Munguia 2 Recap and Highlights

    Round 1

Both fighters began cautiously, Surace testing with jabs and Munguia pressing forward.

A clean right hand from Surace made contact, but Munguia responded with effective body work.

    Round 2

Munguia increased his pace, focusing on breaking through Surace’s tight guard with body shots. Though Surace remained composed, Munguia’s forward momentum was difficult to contain.

    Round 3

The Mexican worked behind a jab and mixed in more variety, pinning Surace to the ropes with sustained pressure. Surace landed occasional counters, but Munguia’s body attacks piled up.

    Round 4

Surace found openings with jabs and sneaky rights, but Munguia’s physicality and ring generalship kept the Frenchman moving backwards.

    Round 5

Munguia battered the midsection with sharp combinations, visibly slowing Surace. Though he avoided overcommitting, Munguia remained in control.

    Round 6

A tentative Munguia still outlanded Surace, who couldn’t recapture the sudden power he’d shown in their first fight. Munguia’s consistency was evident as he chipped away with body shots.

    Round 7

Surace started showing signs of fatigue. Munguia ramped up his output, landing an uppercut and finishing the round with a flurry that pushed Surace back once again.

    Round 8

Munguia’s jab set up a series of hard hooks to the body and head. Surace struggled to mount offense and was largely on the defensive.

    Round 9

Though Surace landed a couple of jabs, Munguia remained in command, landing combinations and absorbing minimal damage in return.

    Round 10

Both fighters exchanged body shots, but Munguia was clearly landing with more authority. Surace did manage to land a clean uppercut, though it didn’t change the momentum.

    Round 11

Munguia surged forward with combinations, outworking a fading Surace. Surace’s punches lacked conviction and volume, and Munguia ended the round with effective body work.

    Round 12

Munguia closed strong, unloading combinations and drawing a warning for a low blow. Surace attempted to rally but was overwhelmed by Munguia’s aggression.

Bruno Surace vs. Jaime Munguia 2: Results

Jaime Munguia def. Bruno Surace via unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111, 117-112) on the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

The win not only avenged Munguia’s shocking loss last December but also underscored his improvement under new trainer Eddy Reynoso. Munguia was far more measured in his approach, choosing to box intelligently rather than chase a knockout.

Munguia also got advice from Alvarez backstage before the fight.

Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs) couldn’t replicate the magic of their first encounter, failing to land anything of significance. The smaller Frenchman was repeatedly forced against the ropes and could rarely throw his right hand with authority.

Following the win, Munguia made it clear he wants bigger names next, calling out fellow super middleweights Edgar Berlanga and Caleb Plant. Both fights would mark intriguing matchups as Munguia continues to climb back into title contention.
