President Donald Trump’s recent appearance at a football game led to a surprising endorsement. While attending the Washington Commanders’ 44-22 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the former president didn’t just watch the game. As a special guest of Commanders owner Josh Harris, who is lobbying to build a new stadium in D.C., Trump also shared his thoughts on which NFL coach has what it takes to run the country.

Why Does Donald Trump Think Nick Sirianni Would Make a Good President?
Trump has always been a vocal football fan, having attempted to purchase an NFL team on multiple occasions, and he frequently weighs in on league issues. This made him a natural guest for former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee, who asked him which current NFL head coach would be a good president. Trump quickly gave the nod to Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni. “You know, we had the great Philadelphia (Eagles) team here; he’s (Nick Sirianni) some coach, too, by the way,” Trump said. “He’s great.”

Sirianni and most of the Eagles had visited the White House earlier in the offseason to celebrate their Super Bowl victory. Beyond his praise for the coach, President Trump also discussed his belief in the strategic similarities between football and warfare.
He argued that the top head coaches in the National Football League could be valuable assets in a national emergency or military conflict.
“I always thought, you know, strategy-wise, you see some of the good strategy, you see some of the good strategy,” the President continued. “Every once in a while you see some pretty bad strategy too. We can name plenty of that. But, you see strategy, I’ve often say, we go out and we get the best four or five coaches, put them in a room, if you’re going to war, and use them, because they do it. Ultimately, it’s all about strategy. It’s about attack, it’s about what angle, give me the angle of attack. I bet you some of these coaches would be great war generals.”
Whether he could be a war general or not, Sirianni has the Eagles playing at a high level again this season. While the offense hasn’t been as explosive under first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has the defense performing at its best.
Currently, the Eagles are 7-2 and hold the lead in the NFC East. According to the PFSN’s NFL Football Playoff Meter, Philadelphia has a 98.6% chance of making the playoffs. The team is tied for the best record in the conference and shares the fewest losses in the entire league.
If the team continues its successful run, Coach Sirianni may need to prepare for another trip to the White House at the end of the season.
