Just when QB Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ passing offense started to produce some big performances through the air in consecutive weeks, the franchise signal-caller suffered what could be a significant injury in the fourth quarter of the team’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.
While we don’t know exactly how severe Lawrence’s ankle injury is at this moment, fantasy football managers need to know the potential fantasy impact of his injury on the rest of the Jaguars’ pass catchers if he misses any time in the coming weeks.
Evan Engram’s Rest-of-Season Fantasy Outlook
Many fantasy managers have griped about the lengthy touchdown drought of Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson heading into the 2023 season, but very few mentioned Jaguars TE Evan Engram’s 15-game streak without a score heading in Week 13.
Fortunately for fantasy managers who have stuck with Engram through this drought, he finally rewarded their loyalty with his first TD of the 2023 campaign, which helped him score more than 15 fantasy points in PPR formats for just the second time all year.
Unfortunately for fantasy managers, an injury to Lawrence would certainly put Engram’s weekly fantasy floor in question, which has been his calling card all season.
It is worth mentioning that WR Christian Kirk suffered a groin injury on the first snap of the game, which could put his status for Week 14 in serious jeopardy. Kirk does the majority of his work in the slot, which could open up more looks for Engram working the middle of the field if Kirk is out of the lineup for an extended period of time.
This appeared to be the case, as Engram caught two passes from backup QB C.J. Beathard on the Jags’ final offensive possession in regulation. He finished with eight receptions for 80 yards and a score.
Despite the fantastic outing, Engram would likely become a fringe top-12 play at the TE position if Beathard ends up getting the starting nod under center in Week 14.
Calvin Ridley’s Rest-of-Season Fantasy Outlook
Just when you thought you could start trusting WR Calvin Ridley in your fantasy lineup again, his inconsistency issues reared their ugly head again in Week 13. Combine that with the potential loss of Lawrence, and we’ve got the recipe for a disaster cake for managers heading into the fantasy playoffs.
After back-to-back 20-plus-point fantasy performances heading into their prime-time matchup with the Bengals, Ridley finished with just four receptions for 26 yards on eight targets.
If Ridley was struggling to be a consistent WR2 with Lawrence under center, it is hard to imagine he’ll be anything more than a boom-or-bust WR3 if Lawrence misses any time in the coming weeks.
Zay Jones’ Rest-of-Season Fantasy Outlook
The veteran wideout has been banged up for the majority of the 2023 season, but WR Zay Jones saw plenty of action against the Bengals after Kirk exited the game. He posted season-high totals in receiving yards (78) and targets (8) against Cincinnati.
Now, Kirk’s injury should help Jones see more looks, but the efficiency of those targets is the big question mark with Lawrence’s injury. If the QB doesn’t miss any time in the near future, then Jones firmly enters the WR3 conversation, while Kirk is banged up.
Unfortunately, I’ll have a hard time ranking him inside my top 40 at the WR position if Beathard is the starting QB for multiple weeks heading into the fantasy playoffs.
Parker Washington’s Rest-of-Season Fantasy Outlook
The rookie receiver from Penn State caught a total of zero passes through the first 12 weeks of the NFL season. However, when Kirk went down with an injury, it was WR Parker Washington who made the most of his expanded role by setting career highs across the board and scoring the first touchdown of his NFL career.
Certainly, he won’t be quite as popular of a waiver wire option if Lawrence’s injury turns out to be significant, but he should be on your radar in PPR leagues if Kirk’s injury turns out to be lengthy.
